Hi all. I have been working as an Executive Assistant at a firm that works for some of the biggest filmmakers/production companies in the world. I live in NYC.I have been here for 7 years. When I was hired I was desperate for a job after being laid off and accepted without negotiating my salary. My starting salary was $50k 7 years ago. Since then my salary has only grown $7,300 and my bonus this past year was $600 net. I lived with my parents but have since moved out 4 months ago and the cost of living in NYC is so expensive and my salary does not cut it. Across the industry my salary is laughable. I have always gotten soo bc with my boss and did get comfortable and now see that I was stupid. In the last year I have been assigned work that wasn't my responsibility at all – I have been assigned work from the audit department, recently assigned a lot of work and have not been trained for work that our audit analyst does. I have a hunch that my company's Audit Analyst is supposed to be doing this work but he has decided not to show up to work and cited toxic work environment and has not been in the office for over 3 months and no one is doing anything about it! Last week I was asked to do work that is essentially that of a paralegal (my boss is a managing partner therefore a lawyer). The work is for a legal case that my boss is doing for someone as a favor OUTSIDE of our company. I asked for a raise two weeks ago and was shut down, I made an argument about cost of living and my salary not being market rate for NYC and that I have been assigned work outside of my regular responsibilities. I said I am putting my foot down on doing the paralegal work for his private client. I was told in a very nasty manner yesterday that my job when they hired me was to assist in any way they ask (which is not true and also btw because this work is for departments I have no education or schooling for they're asking me to do because I am smart and learn quickly. My boss also told me yesterday in a very nasty tone that 'Everyone in the office knows you do nothing. Everyone here knows you have no work.' Which is WHAT? I said what does that mean? I have so much work after continuously being assigned thins for the past year that have never been my responsibility and my boss told me that on the past there were lulls in assignment for me. I said yes there were and is it my fault? I came in to work every day and did what they asked and if I had a day where I had very light work that should negate all the things I have been doing the past year. Anyway, they're not giving me a raise. I really wanted to quit because I have never been spoken to that way and was shocked because my boss is usually good to me. To make matters worse is that the partner of the firm told my boss after the discussed my raise request that there were moments when he walked by my desk and I had nothing to do and was on my phone but I reminded my boss that last month I designed our company's website after the partner asked me to do it — work that he was supposed to do himself because my boss told me he was supposed to handle it. I brought this up and my boss said there was a miscommunication there and no one even thanked me for doing it. I made the website when I had free time over a few weeks because I was gearing up to ask for a raise. And somehow the partner had the audacity to say that I do nothing?! I don't know what to do. I want to go back to my boss to tell him how I didn't expect to be treated this way in such a manner after 7 years because I don't think I even made much argument because I was so shocked when he spoke to me in his office. Also, I am a female and it feels like I am being treated this way because I am a female. I don't think he would talk to a male employee like this especially when the employee who cited toxic work environment gets to never show up in the office is somehow still employed. He also threatened to quit twice and stayed and I think it's because he negotiated a raise. I have started looking at other job postings to see what is out there yesterday and if I could swing it financially I would quit. Btw the partner of the firm
Who said I don't do any work despite literally creating a website he was responsible for, shows up maybe 1X a week but sometimes doesn't at all. He also has his own legal business and earns over $200k. Thank you for reading so far, I am just so sad and feel so low.
