Worker at a large grocery store chain. Yesterday a coworker of mine was supposed to be at work 4pm to midnight. Unfortunately as he was riding his bike there he severely hurt himself. At the time it was told to us that he fell onto some rock or other debris and punctured a hole in his abdomen (found out the next day that this wasn’t true but the injury was much worse. Part of the bike nearly cut his femoral artery in his upper leg in the fall). An ambulance took him to the hospital so we knew he wouldn’t be in for the rest of the day.
Problem was that he was our only closing cashier. Two of us volunteered to take the extra hours to cover the shift, but the manager claimed that he would undoubtedly be in by 6pm. When he didn’t show, we again asked to have one of us stay so the one worker left wouldn’t be alone. Manager then decided to leave early and declared that those person who had to close the store could “just figure something out” on her own and claimed she couldn’t spare giving out ‘extra’ hours to people
