Pulling my hair out screaming

Last Friday (6/3) I'm covering for a coworker and our “bigger” boss is holding office hours in the office my coworker works in. I go in there for something and he stands up and closes the door. He tells me they're “eliminating” my position and I have 2 choices, 1. move to a different department under the same job title but doing work that I literally have no idea how to do. 2. take severance. …okay then.

This week – I talk to my manager. I talk to HR. My coworker accepts a position they were offered. Their first day at the new position is 2 days after my last day.
HR tells me I can *APPLY* for coworker's job. Which is.. my job. We're identical. But, I didn't have to apply for the job in the other department? Oh, and because the job in different department is an option, I do not qualify for severance.

I want to tell them where to shove it so badly. This all seems twisted and backward. If we didn't have exceptional health insurance, I wouldn't think twice about telling them where to shove it.
