“Nobody wants to work anymore.”

Why do they all parrot this phrase around like a badge of honor? It's literally a beacon warning non-Boomers that the position is wildly underpaid, the work culture maximally toxic, and the upwards mobility nonexistent. Sure they might have a little difficulty finding people to fill positions, but simply adding “Nobody wants to work” anywhere on their notice slashes their chances of a high-quality applicant even responding, let alone getting the job. I don't understand the endgame. They already exploit and abuse their employees, and the people applying probably already have some idea of what they're getting into when they apply (based on the industry they're in). Why would an employer fly out of the gate informing people what a piece of shit they are before they had the chance to smash someone's face against the grindstone and abuse them for perfection?
