A coworker copy pasted one of our patient’s names into our group chat. She proceeded to joke about how the name sounded like a cuss word, and that it was a set up to make her cuss. Another fellow coworker joined in by saying “oh wow that does look like a cuss word.”
As someone whose name is very ethnic and different, I felt very offended. Especially, when the culture that the name comes from is a beautiful culture that I admire so much. (Vietnamese)
Not a single manager or supervisor stepped in, or stopped the conversation.
I decided to let a manager know, privately that this was offensive, and all they said was sorry you feel that way.
Thats it.
Today, my friend who is also a co worker, called out for having to go to the ER again. She has a disability and has been in and out with health problems for a few weeks now. She will be getting surgery that will hopefully ease the urgency of this sickness. She scheduled the surgery during Christmas break so that she isn’t missing so much work.
They fired her on the spot without any warning. Prior to this, they assured her that her absences are excused because they know she wasn’t feeling well and out of nowhere just let her go without notice. She found out by checking the schedule.
They let her know that their top priority is attendance and productivity. But I guess the racist comment from our other co worker is something they can let slide.
