Here's a positive for the weekend:
I gave my notice two weeks ago and today was my last day at work.
I'm a salaried people leader who left basically because of a terrible manager, but wow was I impressed with what happened today.
To start, one of my direct reports brought his portable grill to the parking lot and grilled burgers and brats for a group of us in my honor. To top it off, several of my direct reports from off shift and who live 45+ minutes away came in to celebrate in this lunch. Finally, they handed me a beautiful Benchmade pocket knife that they all chipped in to purchase.
I was truly humbled.
Then in the afternoon, another colleague of mine had brought in a giant sheet cake, card, etc and hosted a come and go “party” in a conference room. I didn't really know what to expect, but over two hours at least 25-30 people from multiple departments came in to shoot the shit, share stories, and signed my card.
Finally, after work I went out for drinks with a handful of my direct reports who had asked me to meet them. During drinks, night shift team members were texting me good luck, thank you, etc.
This is just a reminder that there are good things about work too– specifically the relationships that we cultivate. I may not have been the best, but I feel pretty good about the relationships built from my now-previous employment.
