A lesson learned about doing more work

I had a conversation yesterday with my senior manager about career development and compensation. Something that stuck out to me that he said was (this is paraphrased) being ASKED to do more work does not warrant additional compensation but ASKING to do more work is considered. I’ve never seen it so clearly, all of the additional work that has a direct immediate impact that I’ve been ASKED to do has no additional value but ASKING for work that may not be directly beneficial does. If you’ve been stuck wondering why, I think this may help you out.
