If employers wanted the mid career employees to work harder, then they shouldn’t have exploited them when they were minimum wage employees.
I think back to my retail experience. First few jobs, you want to go above and beyond, hit the ground running, make an effort, get recognized and promoted. Like you think the world works…
But you did the effort, and you worked those holidays, and you never moved, never got recognized, never more than a minuscule raise. And it’s your first job l, so you don’t know any better at first, until after a few years, when it’s weighed on you. You quit or quiet quit and move on to a job with your degree or something.
Then those 55-60 year olds at work, soaking up maximum pay, 2-3x your salary, talking about how things use to be different. People would work more than 40 to get the job done, blaming the younger generation. And I’ll tell you, we’ve learned, and been burned before…
