About to placed on PIP for taking a 2 month long vacation

I am a software engineer for one of the leading tech companies. Long story short I couldn’t complete a couple of my tasks before leaving for my 2 months long vacation. I gave a proper hand off to my manager (2 other teammates had already quit the team in the recent past because of him and he is the only other employee left in the team) created docs and videos to help him complete the actions since he was taking over my work. He called me when I was having a personal emergency and I refused to help explained my situation. 2 months later I got back to work to a PIP (performance improvement plan)email as my welcome gift. I am planning to take FMLA leave as soon as I can before starting my pip / accepting the severance. Am I doing this right ? I definitely need more time…

I am planning to take FMLA leave as soon as I can before starting my pip / accepting the severance. Am I doing this right ? I definitely need more time to search for a new job with current market conditions. What could be the consequences of me doing this ? Can they fire me when I’m in FMLA. I’m planning to come back 3 months later and just take the severance.

Ps
I have short term disability insurance and also have enough money to survive.
I really do have a grieving situation (recently lost a family member ) and this job situation has made me get more depressed and stressed.
