[Advice] Boss fires me and then changes mind, what do

I don't know if this type of post is typical here but I want to avoid being lectured on work ethic by other subs. Anyway, I have been working as a temp at a local university since October (for 8 months) but the position was extended from 3 months to indefinitely because of employee turnover in the office. I interviewed for the permanent position in December and was rejected (resume doesn't fit position, which I had gotten because they needed someone to fill role immediately) but my temp period was extended because they failed to find a new hire. I interviewed again last month and after several weeks no word until I get an email telling me Friday will be last day (3 days notice) from the temp agency (not my boss, he told them to tell me). The next day I am in the office and my supervisor (who had only been hired 4 months after me) tells me I need to express desire to keep the job. I say I do because I want an income and he says that isn't convincing and “will have to think about it.” I told him to decide by that night (Wednesday night) so I can organize my schedule but still no word. It is Thursday morning and I don't know if I have a job next week. This all seems really unprofessional to keep me in limbo like this. I am wondering if anyone has advice about how to approach this situation and if there is any way I can leverage this.

TL;DR: Boss fires me and then makes me beg for job back, I don't so he keeps me in employment limbo.
