I thought this would be a good place to get people’s insight into what people are looking for when it comes to working for a small business. I know small businesses aren’t flashy and they don’t offer the same name recognition or perks like a lot of the larger companies do. Often it’s just a few employees in a smaller office location. My parents are struggling to hire employees as many people don’t show up for interviews or don’t show up for the first day. We offer above average wage with raises after one month of probation, and raises every year. For example, we offered our office manager a $10k raise every year since he’s been here (around 5 years) to try and keep up with living costs and as an appreciation for his work. Employees have a 401k, health, dental, and vision insurance. We do have the minimum days off and sick leave and I’m working to try and change that to allow for employees to have more paid sick days and paid vacation days. I’m worried that the office has a bad culture or a work environment that’s causing people to not even show up. And i think im too close to management to see it. What are some things I should be wary of and keep in mind when creating a workplace that’s attractive to applicants? Things I should keep in mind as the business is slowly transferred to me? For those who have worked in small businesses they liked and have stayed at for years, I’d love some insight on how to create that kind of work environment that people would want to stay at.
