After two fantastic interviews I was rejected after reference check

Texas for reference I'm trying to move from one job at my current employer to another department with the same company. The first two interviews were fantastic, including the meeting with the next higher up who literally said as we were leaving “You have my thumbs up”. Texas for reference

I'm trying to move from one job at my current employer to another department with the same company. The first two interviews were fantastic, including the meeting with the next higher up who literally said as we were leaving “You have my thumbs up”.

After that interview they reached out to my references. I know this because I contacted one of them that I knew would give me a good reference. Because I am trying to move within the same company I have my current supervisor as a reference. I know she does not like me, as we have had disagreements in the past (which is one of the main reasons I'm trying to leave this current position).

After contacting the references I got a “thanks but no thanks” style email. I pretty much can guarantee it was due to something my current supervisor said since the email came within 3 hours of them calling my references.

I sent a very professional email to the person I interviewed with to ask why the rejection but he never responded. I plan on asking my supervisor about it as well. I live in a one party consent state so I plan on recording the conversation. I feel like she may have said something purposefully to try to screw me out of the opportunity. What kind of questions should I ask her? What kind of things I try to get her to admit to that would have been technically protected that she shouldn't have said?
