aita? i think the boss is angry

almost six months in on a new job. good relationship with the boss, who is also training me. im a good employee, always on time, never call in, pay attention to learning what im supposed to, and one of the only employees that work the optional overtime (need the money and the boss seems to really appreciate that). its small business with less than ten employees, and ive heard how much trouble they have had finding good people. the other day the boss told us the shop would be closed the monday before july 4th, unpaid. to make up the lost hours we could work this past saturday. this brought my total hours to 50 for the week. 5 hours ot during the week and 5 on saturday. was talking to the boss later and mentioned offhand its nice that the time and half on saturday would make up for…

almost six months in on a new job. good relationship with the boss, who is also training me. im a good employee, always on time, never call in, pay attention to learning what im supposed to, and one of the only employees that work the optional overtime (need the money and the boss seems to really appreciate that). its small business with less than ten employees, and ive heard how much trouble they have had finding good people.

the other day the boss told us the shop would be closed the monday before july 4th, unpaid. to make up the lost hours we could work this past saturday. this brought my total hours to 50 for the week. 5 hours ot during the week and 5 on saturday. was talking to the boss later and mentioned offhand its nice that the time and half on saturday would make up for the day off. he replied that it wouldnt be paid as time and a half. even though it was sandwiched between two full work weeks. i was surprised. the next day i brought up this was contradiction to labor law in my state and he mumbled about “doing us a favor” and that “i didnt have to work if i didnt want to” and could just eat the loss of a days pay. we went back and forth like this for a few minutes, and i made very clear i needed the money. as soon as i said the word “legally” about the pay, his tone changed, and later he approached and said he would pay us overtime rate for the saturday hours.

long story short since then his attitude to me has been totally different, he has been lack about training me, i have to find him and ask questions when i have them, and hes made a few comments about increasing my productivity. this is the third small business in a row that ive worked for that underpaid, and was sketchy about overtime pay, etc. unfortunately i dont see myself staying long after this exchange. sucks to suck
