I quit my job yesterday. I was hired earlier this month, working full time (5 days 40hr) on night shift. Before my first week was up, I was told that we'd be switching into mandatory over time my second week of work, and that I'd be obligated to work an extra 10 hours a week (5 days 50hr).
As soon as I heard this and new that I'd be unable and unwilling to maintain this schedule, I spent the next two weeks talking to several different managers and human resources people in an effort to switch to part time, and I was denied by everyone at every turn.
During my application, interview and orientation process, I wasn't told about the mandatory over time once, which I'd learn is common throughout the year for this company. I was told there'd be over time, but it was described as an opportunity that we'd be made aware of ahead of time, not a mandatory change in hours for everyone. I wouldn't have followed through with full time if I knew I'd be looking forward to 50 hour weeks, because I just can't maintain that, especially not when I'd be getting home from work at 4am.
After two weeks of talking to everyone I could and being told no, I just decided to not go in and turn in my resignation on my first day this week. I feel like I was misled, because no one informed me or the folks that were hired with me that we'd have to work over time until we were on the job. I also feel that there's no way in hell it's such a hassle to switch me to part time that they'd rather I just quit? I don't get it, and everyone I've talked to in the time it's been an issue has told me they think it's bullshit.
Anyway, I guess I just want some opinions. Should I have just stuck it out? Am I right for turning my back on a company that lied about the nature of their over time, essentially lying about he hours of the shift I applied for? What would you have done?
