Answered that I wanted my masters, got denied a position.

I had an interview last week, the day after a break up no less, and was asked from a sheet of interview questions printed off of Google, what my “5 year plan was.” I am going to be 29 this year and I still have no damn idea. I answered that I will most likely still be in the same city that I live in and working. I said EVENTUALLY would like to think about my masters but at this time it is not affordable nor do I have a solidified plan/timeline for this. According to the gentleman who set the interview up, I checked all boxes for being hired, but because I mentioned education, I was denied this position. Due to the fact that I may want to allow myself the ability to pursue and further my dreams/aspirations I was deemed unfit for the role. Imagine if I mentioned kids or marriage!!

Like what do they want to hear from us with that question?? Its the same as going on a date, and the person you are getting to know, 10 minutes in asks, do you want to get married? Its asking a lot of a person that you aren't giving THAT much to.

Any advice on answering that one? Or how to get out of answering? I feel like not answering or skirting around that particular question raises flags for the interviewer.
