My company makes it near impossible to engage in salary related discussions. As my previous request to have a conversation about comp was ignored, I scheduled additional time with the decision makers.
The company has seen a ton of turnover in the last year and I have up until this point been applauded for my contributions, celebrated for my effort, reassured that things would get better in time. That all changed today when I asked for money. The conversation started off great, as the team shared a wide range of compliments towards my work. Upon introducing the idea that these contributions respectfully justify a salary increase, the narrative shifted. I was then told in reality my contributions were actually, “fine effort” but flawed, ultimately cheapening my own perspective on the nature of my work and worth to the organization.
