Anyone else get better pay and roles by being a ‘worse’ employee?

I don't know if I'm just lucky but I have found that the more I do the 'wrong' thing, the better I do in the world of work. In roles where I've been super keen for no extra reward, I've only ever gotten promises of better outcomes and more donkey work. Since I stopped giving a f, and showing I'm fairly disinterested in doing more, or even my current duties unless I'm paid more, slacking off and even quitting, I get offered promotions, pay rises, bonuses, and less 'hard work' is expected of me while I am given higher level responsibilities and people to manage. I'm now at a point where I could care so little, I am frequently late, demanding, and set my own terms without apology, and the bosses now treat me with even more respect and bring me even closer into the inner workings. I think it's something to do with them recognising value only when you show you have no interest in being a good donkey with lower value.
