Apparently complaining about wanting to get paid in a timely and consistent manner is “drama”

This is a long one but bear with me because I gotta air this out somewhere and I'm pretty sure this is the appropriate sub for work related rants and I'm gonna use my old account since my main account has a decent amount of identifying info. So I'm a house cleaner who makes commission, so not hourly paid. My boss's husband, who I don't think has a real title, is in charge with paying his wife's employees. We used to have direct deposit but then they wanted to switch banks since thier banker went somewhere else and they wanted that banker specifically. Not sure why that matters since all the bankers at the first bank will do the same level of quality but whatever. So some noncompete clause or something meant my employer couldn't use preferred banker for a few months, so they started giving us checks. A bit…

A bit annoying to have a new errand on Friday when I just want to go home but its no big deal.

Then big deals started to show up. Employees were getting bounced checks. If you were one of the last ones to cash your paycheck then guess what? You're not getting paid on time and you get to pay the bounced check fee. We'd get reimbursed for it if we took the initiative to complain but we still had to wait a bit for a new check. Some employees could no longer cash thier paychecks because thier banks no longer wanted to cash specifically our employer's checks. So those employees had to go to employer's bank, get physical cash and then take that cash to their bank to deposit so now two unnecessary errands.

For about the past month now they've been saying that we're going back to direct deposit but it's been a new excuse every week. We never know when our checks will be ready on Friday unless we pester them enough with asking. I have no idea why they can't be ready first thing in the morning when the husband doesn't do anything else. There's an admin assistant and another woman who handles client's, cleaning estimates and scheduling so there's nothing occupying his time but even if there were, I feel like paying your employees in a timely manner should take priority.

Yesterday though, my coworker had had enough. She told the admin assistant, which is the person we're supposed to complain to small company you know, that many of us if not all are not happy about this situation. Coworker asked “what would you guys do if we all just left because we're sick of this?” My coworker told me that the admin just said “Don't leave. I know it's frustrating. I'll let them know.”

So after my 3rd house I'm just waiting at the office for my check to be dropped off, remember I'm not hourly so I'm wasting my own time to get the money I've already earned the previous week. The woman who handles scheduling asks if I'm one of the “walkout” people, in a tone that means she's obviously not happy about it. I just say no and she moves on.

After about an hour of waiting along with the mutinous coworker, as I joking referred to her as, and 20 minutes before my bank closes, the husband walks in with my check and I promptly leave since I'm on a time limit if I want money today. But the mutineer is given her check last and she later told me why.

When I left the husband bitched to her about how “we girls are nothing but drama” and that “he pays us on time and very well and if we don't like it then we can just leave”. Luckily she recorded it since I already told her about the scheduler's comment and about how they're now pissed at her, Indiana so 1 party consent state.

I was able to squeeze in an interview inbetween my 2nd and 3rd house yesterday so I hope I get the good news on Monday so I can follow the husband's orders and leave. The only ones who I'll feel bad for are my remaining coworkers who will have to take on all my houses when I'm gone.
