Hi world sorry this is long. A few months ago in the beginning of March I started a new job at a winery as basically a hostess but they call it a receptionist. Anyway, I just sit at the front desk and check people in and sell wine/merch to go. On my first day I noticed a tip jar on my desk (not visible to customers) but didn’t really think anything of it since it was my first day and I was learning the ropes. There are two managers at the winery and only a few employees. Later that week, maybe my second or third day, one of my managers (Amy) and a coworker came up to me and told me to put out my tip jar and I will quote “to make that money girl.” So I did and some days I didn’t make anything but others I would make maybe $20-40 cash (also as a side note I get to keep the credit card tips from things I’ve sold). So a few days ago I worked a busy Saturday and made around $50 (not sure if its relevant) but I was happy to have beer/gas money and I did not go around flaunting nor did i tell anyone what I made or anything like that I just took the cash and left for the day. I came into work the next day and I noticed the tip jar was gone. I decided to ask Amy about it thinking maybe it got moved accidentally. Amy kind of looked at me in strange way and told me that the other manager (Karen) took it and put it back on their side of the bar. The next time that I saw Karen I asked her why she took the jar and she told me that it was never a tipped position to begin with and walked away. I just find it strange that the tip jar was out on the desk VISIBLE TO EVERYONE for two months and now all of a sudden I’m not allowed to have it? I was pretty annoyed at the action because even though I didn’t make much I appreciated every dollar someone gave me. Are my managers being assholes to me? Or should I just get over it?
Also: when I interviewed with both managers they told me it was $19 per hour with tips or a higher wage with no tips they were “still trying to work it out.” So I looked on indeed and found the job posting (I applied via indeed) and saw that they had the pay posted at a higher wage than $19.
