I worked at a DG until yesterday. It wasn't great, and I'm just trying to help pay bills. I was hired in to work a few days a week for very low pay. Whatever. It was an easy job, so alright.
Why does every corporation expect you to immediately get super invested in the state of their business? I am part-time w zero benefits. Luckily, my husband makes good money, but I like to work some. I don't need/want a high-paying, high-powered career or even a job. I just wanted to help out, pass the time a few days a week, and go home and not worry with anything else (I worked at a super stressful, super low paying hospital lab job prior, so I'm done with that kind of pressure).
I got talked into a part-time keyholder position for a few extra dollars an hour. The responsibility seemed to skyrocket and suddenly I'm working 5-6 days a week on an entirely opposite schedule than my husband, who I'm now barely seeing.
In August, I put in to be off for my 40th birthday (I'm not sad about aging, and I want to celebrate). 40 is a milestone birthday.
I had a tense text exchange w my manager after being left alone in the store unexpectedly for my whole shift until I got ahold of HER boss and she told me to close down the I'd been there for like 8 hours with nobody to relieve me for a break.
The day before I left really late bc the cashier I was working with tried to call out, but they made her come in puking. I saw and heard her throwing up, and it was making me nauseous. The work just became grinding. Tired, hungry, and sore from moving boxes of crap all day, I messaged my manager and excited my displeasure at her inability to answer any of MY calls, you know, as the person who never really closed the store before (we're gonna call the training…sparse.)
I guess she decided to take exception and scheduled me to work the entire weekend of my birthday. I closed the store last night and handed my keys to the new keyholder. I told her to tell them I won't be back. I hope she's able to cover the now 10ish shifts plus my birthday ok. What incentive do I have to sink my life into a company that can't pay me a decent wage or honor even the smallest requests?
Luckily she's usually free on the weekend, so maybe she will work it. Lol
