What Counts as a Landlord?
So I was having this discussion with some friends last night. One of my soap boxes is how much real estate has been bought up by people looking to rent out houses pricing people out of the housing market. My parents recently bought a house they are doing a rent-to-own with my brother. He works as a teacher and it's unlikely he'll be able to save up to buy a house on his own in the current market, especially with rent going up each year. This way he is paying my parents the equivalent of the mortgage in rent each year which is a fixed rate and getting ownership with each payment. I'm not sure how it all works legally but I know they had a lawyer draw up the rental contract so it would work that way. I was telling this to some friends last night and one…
The most significant lie I want to pull is adding “Senior” in front of my current title. I've had all the responsibilities and more of a senior-level role for several years, so I have no reservations about being able to talk through experience and skills. It's just a technicality at this point. I'm aware that many places will run a check on your employment history before hiring you, but how likely is it to actually get caught and lose an offer because of something like this?
As year draws to close check your PTO status and policies and make sure you don't lose pay because you didn't use PTO. This part of your pay package, and if you don't use it you lose money. See how much you've used, check policy for any rollover amount, if you are in a state that separates protected pay versus standard PTO – (40 hours of PTO is protected from write ups, can't get fired etc). Then based on what you see, take your sick days/PTO until you are at the rollover amount or used it up. Every year we get people who don't use sick/PTO time and they lose money/PTO because they didn't plan ahead.
Selfishness is philanthropic
That's the message being sent by a series of high-profile Silicon Valley leaders, most recently billionaire venture capitalist Marc Andreessen. Philanthropy has historically been framed as giving back — after making their fortune from and within society, individuals then return the favor. Under the new conception of philanthropy, the act of making the fortune itself is the philanthropic act. There's no need to give any money away — feel free to go ahead and drop more than $220 million on Malibu property if you're so inclined. Just by dint of getting rich, your philanthropic work is largely done. Harvard and Stanford economist Robert Barro sketched the broad outlines of this philosophy in a 2007 WSJ op-ed, focused on Microsoft founder and philanthropist Bill Gates. Gates, he wrote, “is kidding himself if he believes that the efforts of the Gates Foundation are likely to provide society anything like the past and…
Just another detached from reality MLM packaged love story. It's so cringe to watch. Taylor Swift has probably a staff of hundreds of people that work in the shadows of her brand. Dancers, stage crew, set designers, choreographers, sound board operators, lighting technicians, production assistants, security, catering crew, wardrobe department. List goes on and on and the media sells it to the public as just one celebrity titan that “works harder” than everyone else. When does this shit stop?
So this is going to be long – Looking for advice on how to strategically leave my toxic job. Well actually more so my toxic boss. It’s a shame bc I actually didn’t mind the job or work at all but my boss is becoming so controlling, manipulative, and just unbearable. I’m tired of walking on eggshells and getting yelled at like a child bc she’s nitpicking my work. Yesterday she even tried to tell me that I’m actually overpaid for my position and she expects more leadership from me and that I’m not doing very high level skill work – then ends it with “well thanks for all your help today”. The day before that i got yelled at bc the paper towel holder i ordered fell off. Mind you I’m helping her do not only general management for one company but also another sister company – also doing…
Do people actually get jobs from indeed
I know indeed is a legitimate website, but does anyone actually get jobs from applying and sending a resume through indeed? I have literally applied to 900 positions in my field in the past three months, I'm extremely qualified for all of them with 23 years experience, and I haven't heard a fucking peep from any of them, I've called probably a third of them directly to follow up, and they always say, we'll take a look and call you back in a day or two. Almost feels like indeed is just a data mine for employers at this point.
