I work for a large privately owned manufacturing company in the Midwest. I started a few years ago and have only heard the other employees who have worked there for decades complain about “how it isn’t what it used to be.” These are a few of the examples of the “good ol’ days” that they have said: • The founder/owner (who was a billionaire) would drive by houses of prospective employees and judge the condition of their home and use that to help determine whether to hire them or not. • Perfect attendance was highly rewarded. This meant that some employees would miss funerals of their parents as using a bereavement day would count against perfect attendance. • Employees would miss the birth of children to not miss out on perfect attendance as well. • Annual reviews would get docked if shoes were not shiny enough (completely up to the…

Back when I worked at a grocery store down south we got some of the most horrid customers you can imagine. Once had a customer state there phone number so fast I couldn’t keep up and our pin pads to type in their number where the worst and would always freeze up so I told the customer the pin pad froze and to please give me the number again and he was like “No, the computer isn’t the error you’re the error. What do you have ADHD or something?” And another time there was a woman coming being nasty and rude to young girls half her age to the point that it was so uncomfortable to be around her and she even through a box of fried chicken at the front end manager because she was upset it wasn’t to her liking and she’d always bitch if there wasn’t fresh…
Job search woes.
I was paid a slightly below average wage for my role as a general manager and events coordinator for a privately owned, local family business. I worked my way up from an entry position to general manger over the course of 20 years. Last year I nearly died due to stress of overwork and the family who owned the business, who had known me since my teen years and who know my wife and children personally, quietly ended my contract whilst I lay in intensive care. We’ve tried legal proceedings, but I’m now a broke guy with no job and they’re millionaires with multiple businesses and according to our lawyers, I don’t have much of a case – but that’s not why I’m ranting. I’ve since been applying for work within the events/hospitality sector and even though my degree is IN hospitality and I have 20 years experience – 7…
Your reward for this contest is…PTO?
My company is having an event this month and whoever makes the most sales wins 8 hours of PTO. The PTO must be used by 12/31/2023 or else they lose it. What are everyone’s thoughts on this?
Title. I’ve been working from a phone hotspot for the last 6 months. Usually about halfway through the month, I run out of data. 50-60% of my job role involves documentation/internet connection. I began making a fuss about this last month and was told “slow or no internet is not a reason for you to work from home”. I asked if they would pay me overtime to do the work at home and they said no. This is a salaried position. I start work in a few hours and I already know I will have no internet because I got a text saying I have used 100% of my hotspot data. I’m almost considering using my sick time simply because sitting there with no wifi just seems so pointless, yet they won’t budge on letting me go home. Gotta please the capitalistic overlords with the appearance for working!
What to do when idle?
My job requires me to be idle until I’m called into action. I’m at a repair facility and I have to be at a work station. I have 2-4 hours per day with nothing to do and I’m looking for suggestions. I do get paid for all this time.
I worked for small businesses most of my life but gave recently scored a dream job somewhere with fantastic conditions. It is a surreal culture shock. It is due to the fact that this place has had very strong union representation for over 30 years. It is easy to forget that your labour is being exploited when your needs are met. Good conditions should be the bare minimum, we should be fighting for a lot more. Instead, due to capitalist greed and exploitation, most of us are still fighting for a livable wage. My workplace has 4 weeks holiday leave, 4 weeks sick leave (increased from 2 since Covid), family & carers leave, 12 months maternity leave, 6 months parental (Dad/partner) leave, with a 6 week flexible return to work period, cultural leave, long service leave and probably more I don't know about. We have access to flexible work arrangements,…
Can we have a weekly vent/rage post?
Just so that we can vent about little things that wouldn't necessarily make a good post/be taken down for low effort, etc. For example, today at my glorious corporate prison, my team keeps a brand new iPhone and iPad locked in a drawer. They are taken out and used once a month to check if the company website works OK, despite being able to do the exact same thing from a normal computer browser. And what, we are meant to care about profits again? Pfft.
