Is this the Midwest equivalent of Avocado Toast? Local news station says to eat less steak to combat grocery prices.

Here's the news segment from this weekend. Apparently, all I have to do to combat spending 40% more at grocery store is to eat less stake. Not sure of the maths on this one. https://www.kcci.com/article/inflation-at-the-grocery-store-remains-high-heres-where-you-can-save/44901266

My motivation and future outlook are at an all time low.

Been with a large corporation in the finance industry for almost 3 years, came straight out of university. Shifted jobs and have a relatively high position compared to people my age. Downside is, the work is soul-crushing and everyday I dread the thought of another day spent behind a screen managing spreadsheets. I’m so deep into the system that I see no way out. It is sad to think that the majority of my time is spent doing something that does not even remotely connect with a personal sense of meaning or purpose.

Can I refuse to conduct interviews?

I work at a small company with no hiring manager. When I finally convinced the boss recently to hire a new person for our team I was told to handle the hiring process myself. I have no experience with this. It’s also the only office job I’ve had although I’ve been here for several years, so I’m not sure if it’s out of line to explain I am not comfortable conducting the interviews myself?

I hate my job and going back is depressing as hell

I guess this is more of a venting thing but I recently just got married to the love of my life and had the most amazing 3 weeks! However I work as GP receptionist and I'm genuinely dreading returning to work. The people I work with are lovely and all, however the actual work is toxic af. Everyday, I get yelled at or called names because I can't give people what they want and when I come home I'm so burnt out from it all that I can't do anything. When I was off I immediately felt better, like a weight was lifted. I didn't have to worry about people treating me like the scum of the earth for doing a job, I don't want to do and have no power to chage anything. The NHS is falling to shit and we're at the forefront of it, everyday I get…

Firing My Employer

Firing My Employer I recently quit a job after 8 months of bickering about too many hours without compensation only because it was a “salary” position. This is the email I sent the day before starting my new job (with a company I have a 6-1/2 year history with.) I did not give a notice (first time in my life) out of fear that they would let me go and I was living paycheck to paycheck with a wife and 2 kids at home… I thought it was rather funny. The guys that I worked with there got a laugh, as well… This is what I sent to my boss. I bcc’d the superintendent and VP of Fabrication, as well: The purpose of this email is to serve as an immediate termination of (said employer) as my employer. I, knowingly, took a tremendous pay cut in order to have more…

My company is switching my position without me even being present.

So long story short the small business I was working with for over 6 years recently got bought up by a much bigger company. A few months ago I was offered a higher position but the way it was presented to me was not convincing at all, I mean even the salary that was given seemed too good to be true and the superior came out with it out of tin air (kid you not he sat there and looked up to think about it). Anyway, I turned it down as I'm looking to exit onto another industry anyway but today while out sick I get a text from a close friend in the company telling me they just switched me to a whole other position and other people got moved as well with no choice, they just said this is where you will be now. I'm completely thrown off…

The “Hard work gets you ahead” myth

I absolutely hate it when people perpetrate or spread this obscene lie. Being a hard worker will get you used, exploited, broke, and eventually broken. If you don't back up your hard work with communication, social problem solving, advancement, and hard negotiations… I would say being a hard worker is an incredible disadvantage.

Forced me to work the night shift

This happened at least 20 years ago. I was a young student who was earning some pocket money. Found a job at a supermarket and earned $5/hr. It was not too bad. The going rate for such jobs was around there but the night shift usually demanded $15-$20/hr. I’m a hardworker and never slacked off. I did my job well and they knew it. So after working here for 6 mths, my boss called me in and asked if i was willing to do a night shift stint at another store for a week. To be frank, I was just doing this job to pass time and sleep was very important for me. So i told me i did not mind the stint as long as i was paid the market rate. He told me i would be paid $7/hour and given a $10 allowance. The best part, he wanted…

Excuses to leave for a week on short notice?

Reddit, I need your help. I got invited on a vacation September 10-17 and seeing as it’s the 29th right now… I don’t have much time to put in a notice. I work as a cashier so my job isn’t terribly important and we have plenty of help, so I’d really love to take some time for myself especially since I often work overtime and cover for coworkers. What’s a believable semi emergent excuse to leave town for a week?

How to know if I can trust my boss?

I have a boss who is hard to read and rarely ever give feedback. Let's say that she's nearing retirement and has a lot of respect in her region and by her workers. But at the same time; it seems like she doesn't like to be criticized and can turn on you. I'd like to see her as a very experienced and senior boss and a good person( we work in managerial positions in a psycho-medical center); who wants the best for the younger generations. But at the same time… I feel like she's a manipulative snake. All I get is negative vibes from her. She didn't hire me BTW and it seems like she didn't like me in the beginning. I'm not sure about the history of my workplace… and I'm afraid to ask other colleagues what they think of her. No one dares to say something off when…
