My job is a tumor to my soul

Like many of you, I work in a magical land called “the kitchen”. Growing up I worked in them as well, being dragged to work in them since I was 7 to work at my parents kitchen jobs with them. Needless to say I've grown extremely skilled. Now being 19 I work in a kitchen, mostly cause it's what I know and grew up expecting to be. The problem is that because I'm do good at my job, I'm made to pick up EVERYONE'S slack. For those of you in kitchens, imagine, you come in and every screen has a few items on it, but the line has no people, they are usually 30min to 1hour late, all of them. You get to moving rushing to get cought up, did I clock in? Your alone doing flat, fry, broil, and pantry. You keep haveing to go to the back to…

5 years of experience…

TLDR – I'm tired of employers valuing experience over proven skill and enthusiasm. I'm probably one of the few people here who genuinely enjoy what they do. In fact I've been constantly undervalued and held back at my current place of work, but because of the EXTREMELY competitive nature of my job, leaving without first being hired elsewhere would be foolhardy. I've been offered numerous “opportunities” likely due to my skill and enthusiasm. Nonetheless I've witnessed time and time again people taking up the positions I had been “so close” to getting, who then complain to me about how they “really struggle with the work” or that “you're lucky you're not doing what I'm doing”, even “no no, you don't wanna be doing this job haha”. The worst part of it all, is the quality of the product (in this case of a highly creative endeavor), is significantly worsened by…

A tip for managers/bosses who want to be better than what they see on this sub

Maybe I'm hopelessly optimistic, but I've seen just a couple of posts here from people at least claiming to be managers/bosses. They say this sub “opened their eyes” and helped them recognize their failures as leaders. They say they want to be better. If so, that's great. If you are one such person looking here for what not to do, that's a great start, but you may not know where to begin. Knowing what NOT to do to terrorize your staff is less than a third of the battle. Knowing what TO do is everything, so I wanted to give you a starting point. Be mindful of the fact that if you work for a company/corp that is driven by shareholder value, especially if your business unit is owned by a private equity firm, doing the right thing and being a good leader may be your quickest method of getting…

Work is killing me

I started my job a month ago and so far I’ve taken 3 sick days because it’s making my life miserable. Every day I wake up and I honestly contemplate suicide as I can’t face another day of working my life away. Will I ever feel any different? I feel like there is only one way this can go. I really need to find a way to quit nicely, any tips?

My job called my doctor to dig up dirt on me, and then fired me.

Thought everybody would like this story. January my job hired me on. Instantly they messed up my banking info, and refused to fix it for a month. So I worked for a month without pay before I got upset, and stopped showing up. They called me telling me my pay was on its way…which I discovered was also short, because the hr lady admitted she was guessing on my hours worked. They also asked me to come back, and I agreed long as I wasn't forced to work overtime at 50+ hours a week in 5 days as I am epileptic, and have stomach issues bad, and long work weeks make me way worse. They agreed with a doctors note from me. So I called both my doctors. My primary denied me the note, and said I had to ask my neurologist. My neurologist also denied me the note stating…

I’m moving and I don’t think I’m going to put in my two weeks. Am I doing the right thing?

I don’t know if this is the right sub to post this in but I figured maybe someone could give me some advice on this. I work at a restaurant that’s extremely high volume and I make good money. The managers suck, they’re petty and abusive. They’ll yell at you in front of customers, fire people over things as small as dropping a dipping sauce on the floor, and they never appreciate any work you put in. I’ve been working there for some time now and I’ve been wanting to move for years. I have finally decided I’m going to move, and I generally always put in my two weeks at jobs. But this job doesn’t do two weeks from what I hear. They’ll just fire you after you put it in over their own pettiness. We are short staffed right now so I don’t know if that’s what they’d…

Work summary/time log

Have any of you been asked to submit work summaries or time logs of how you spent your day/what you worked on? I find this to be a deal breaker as far as what makes a work environment comfortable. I’m offended by these types of questions and I consider it to be an invasion of privacy to be asked how I budget my time with regard to my job responsibilities. If there’s an issue with an employee’s performance, of course that needs to be addressed – but to just be asking people to recap their work is a huge red flag to me. It’s obvious that the vast majority of people prefer to work from home. Instead of accepting that, management would rather alienate employees by asking invasive questions about time. Just a sign it’s time to move on when management shows this blatant lack of respect to efficient and…

what’s with these video cover letters?

so the backgammon pizza in my neighborhood has the help wanted sign up and my son applied online. the application looked pretty straightforward until the part about the video. he chose “skip” but i just can't help wondering if they are going to “skip” his application for not submitting a video clip of himself so they can check his appearance first. is this standard now? did he make a mistake by skipping the video?
