Doing the bare minimum: yay or nay
I realise this REALLY depends on where you work. But I would like to hear thoughts.. I (30) have a friend (31) who works for a big corporation, really believes in what they're doing (well, in the scientific side to what they're doing) and said to me he gets frustrated when younger people (e.g. under 26s/gen Z) work at the absolute bare minimum of their entry-level role- which is fairly well-paid – instead of going 'above and beyond', which is what he and many of his peer group did did, and is noticing a generational shift in attitude. I argued that this was a good thing, and people are realising their work needs them more than they need the job, and if you want people to go above and beyond, pay them more. He conceded that yeah, maybe he had a different attitude to work and progressing in one's career.…
I've been at my architect & design company for just over 3 years now. In the last year they've taken away a lot of our small quality of life benefits, like our education fund, laid off about 18% of our design staff and just announced that they are “pausing compensation reviews for now”. We are going on a year and a half of no cost of living adjustments. They raised all of our client bill rates in January and yet STILL can't give us meager raises? Even our “profit sharing bonus” was garbage this year (but the co-owner bought a new house). Do I bother waiting around to see what changes or jump ship? I know the job market is trash right now, but my moral is so fucking low.
I have no idea what to do.
22F, working full-time at a candy store in a mall. I am a strong believer that the human race was not meant to work. It is a belief rooted deep in my soul and my whole family resents me for it. I constantly get told to just suck it up and accept that it's just the way things are but I refuse to accept it. I have been from job to job and nothing is working out. I am at a job that I hate with a 24 year old manager who does nothing but get high in the bathroom and dissapear whenever a customer comes up to the register to check out. I cannot stand on my feet all day for the rest of my life. I should not be going through physical pain for money. I didn't go to college because it's expensive and I can't bring myself…
The commute? Really?
Got linked to this from another article and couldn’t not share it. Did this person really suggest that wfh people miss the commute!?! Every single thing they listed is why we LIKE working from home !
Trying really hard to reconcile these:
Former U.S. bank bailout administrator: Silicon Valley Bank is being bailed out : NPR Student Loan Forgiveness: Relief for Public Loans Pushed Back Due to Lack of Funds | GOBankingRates Seems like a bizarre case of simultaneously “having hundreds of billions of dollars available,” and “not having any money available.” It doesn't seem like they're trying very hard to mask that they have quantities of money available to pay for all sorts of things, but won't use any of it except to benefit the people and organizations who have influence over the government.
Unpaid time off keeps getting denied
I started a new job in August. I told them before getting hired that I would be off for a couple of weeks due to my wedding and honeymoon that I had planned for 2 years. This was deemed fine. I tried my best earlier in the year to not take time off and covered for other people when needed. Then I asked for 2 unpaid days off for my bridal shower and it was denied because I’m taking time off for my wedding. Okay fine whatever. It was the month before after all. I just got notified that more time I tried to take off to visit my friend in another state next month was denied because I already took time off for my wedding. I was only taking 2 days off! Other people get to take vacation after vacation but I’m stuck not getting a chance to take…
