Just needing to vent. I thought I was done with this crap once I got my masters and found a good-paying city job. I’m a relatively new city employee and have been dealing with a potentially very expensive project that could get the city sued for non-compliance. This client has been badgering me to pay their fees to start the state-mandated clock on their project. We’ve been waiting for the city’s attorney to weigh in and the client showed up in-person to demand we take action. As I believe someone in my position isn’t the right person to speak to this client (I might accidentally say something that could get us in trouble) I asked one of the head managers for the department to come help. I was told that we’re all supposed to be able to handle any problem that comes up (we’re a flat org! -yeah right) and…

Or is that just a way to enable companies to be horrible?
INT. POLICE STATION – DAY A dimly lit room. DESMOND HART, a seasoned detective in his mid-40s with a rugged exterior and weary eyes, sits alone at his desk. Papers and case files are scattered haphazardly in front of him, reflecting his frustration. The sound of ringing telephones and distant chatter fills the air. Desmond takes a sip from his cold coffee, deep in thought. His face reveals the torment of a man torn between justice and the unthinkable. A framed photograph of his wife and young daughter sits on the edge of his cluttered desk, a constant reminder of the stakes. CAPTAIN JENKINS, a grizzled veteran with a no-nonsense attitude, approaches Desmond's desk. CAPTAIN JENKINS (desperately) Hart, we got another one. A billionaire. The same M.O. Desmond looks up, his weary eyes meeting Jenkins' gaze. DESMOND HART (sighs) How many does that make now? CAPTAIN JENKINS (seething) Five. Five…

aita? i think the boss is angry
almost six months in on a new job. good relationship with the boss, who is also training me. im a good employee, always on time, never call in, pay attention to learning what im supposed to, and one of the only employees that work the optional overtime (need the money and the boss seems to really appreciate that). its small business with less than ten employees, and ive heard how much trouble they have had finding good people. the other day the boss told us the shop would be closed the monday before july 4th, unpaid. to make up the lost hours we could work this past saturday. this brought my total hours to 50 for the week. 5 hours ot during the week and 5 on saturday. was talking to the boss later and mentioned offhand its nice that the time and half on saturday would make up for…
Many job requirements/prerequisites are bullshit and it’s incredibly frustrating how many employers will pass over potentially great candidates who can LEARN, all because they don’t fit a job to the T. Average job ad requirements are a mile long, wanting this certification, that diploma, this many years of experience, this type of licensing, this brand of shoe (/sarcasm, but they may as well). It’s ridiculous. Part of the modern day hiring crisis isn’t workers fault, it’s due to employers, recruiters, and HR being full of themselves. Jobs, especially trades, used to invest more in their employees when it came to training and teaching the ropes. You could have a high school diploma and work your way up and learn along the way. Now it seems like if you don’t come into the job basically already knowing EVERYTHING and then some, you’re not good enough. Obviously this doesn’t apply to every…
The Profit Paradox: Time’s Temptation
I wondered what would happen if corporations figured out how to stretch the year by a week, so I asked chatGPT. The Profit Paradox: Time's Temptation In the not-too-distant future, the world had become a place where the pursuit of profit reigned supreme. Mega-corporations held unimaginable power, dictating the course of society and manipulating the lives of ordinary people. As each fiscal year came to a close, the insatiable greed of these corporations grew bolder and more audacious. In this bleak landscape, one corporation stood above them all: OmniCorp. Led by the ruthless CEO, Maximus Steelheart, OmniCorp was renowned for its unethical practices and cutthroat tactics. Steelheart's insidious desire to maximize profits knew no bounds, and he devised a plan that would forever alter the very fabric of time. Driven by the notion that time was a resource to be exploited, Steelheart ordered his top scientists and engineers to…
Shock and awe
I would have never treated an employer with so much apathy 15 years ago, but lets face it, this is late stage capitalism and Im gonna treat these jabronis like dirt. Worked at a small employer for a couple months, decent owners. But the hours were little, the pay was basic, and their administration is old school. Like using manila folders to store info old. Found myself another job and texted the bosses to let them know Im not coming in anymore. Queue the constant phone calls and voice messages. You know the drill. “we just want to talk.” “If I could just have five minutes of your time…” “Could we perhaps chat about your time here and discuss why you left?” “This came at a shock to us.” No I aint chatting with anymore old boomers unless Im getting paid. Im not giving free consultations, Im not giving exit…
The joy of hourly pay
When I was forced to come back to office, I was put on a waiting list for my bulding’s parking garage. Until then I’m required to park at a garage that is a 6-7 minute walk from my office. So I clock in when I start that walk. This email infuriated me. Mainly because my manager works from home everyday
