Aside from engineering jobs, there doesn't seem to be any good paying jobs in demand. Especially now that COVID has had people realize they can do their cushy jobs from home. With consumerism at an incredible high and the need for workers in the people with special needs fields. The low pay terrible schedule fields is where the workforce seems to be pointing us. Direct care, fast food, retail jobs, delivery drivers. Basically, the jobs that require to to work long hours and/or multiple jobs just to scrap by.
Epiphany Alert: Life or Death?
The lady sat down in seat 14C. We glanced across the empty 14B between us and introduced ourselves. We'd been told there would be a delay before takeoff, so of course, conversation ensued… Inevitably, The Question came up: “So, what do you do?”, she asked. “Whatever I want, whenever I can.”, was my rather glib answer. She looked at me strangely. Then, “No, I meant for a Living! What do you do for a Living?” “Ah, of course. How do I generate the value required to earn the money I need to do whatever I want the rest of the time? Is that what you mean?” “Well, I'm not sure… now.” We sat there, looking at each other through quizzical eyes. It wasn't exactly an awkward moment, but it was somehow stimulating and disturbing at the same time – as if an unexpected conundrum had just dropped out of the…
WFH people need a reality check.
While you guys cry about which air conditioned building you have to work in, try to remember there are tons of folk about to leave home to work outside in parts of the country under extreme heat conditions. Just saying, try having a bit of empathy and a touch of gratitude. Saw a post here of a guy saying he wanted more money cuz he no longer got free lunch at work, or people saying “fine, if I have to work from office I want my travel time/expense covered”, like who do you think you are? Y'all act like this was a long standing right that is being ripped away, when reality is for most you only started WFH 3 years ago. You may win the battle, but I guarantee you'll lose the war. If your job can be done remotely, it is only a few jumps from being replaced…
I plan on bringing this up with the hr folks today. It's been 92+ days since I was hired. I was hired through a staffing agency, if that's relevant. Im pretty sure we employ enough people that they are required to offer insurance as per the ACA. What information do I need to know when I speak with them today? When the ACA was first passed, I worked for a company that had lost their provider. When I received my tax info for that year, they had noted that I was offered insurance during this period. I don't want to have to deal with that sort of situation again with this employer as I definitely DO want insurance.
“I don’t have an answer for you.”
Recently I received a job opportunity an hour away. It’s an opportunity that would literally change my life. I did what I thought to be the sensible thing and let my bosses know about the situation. They asked what the offer entailed and from previous conversations I thought they would give me a counter offer. To my surprise there were constant questions about the offer I received but no attempt to make staying any more desirable. When I finally asked what they could offer I was told “I don’t have an answer for you.” I do enjoy my job, but with that it solidified taking the new position.
So I applied for a maintenance job with my new company and in the interview the manager even said when he started about 15 years ago he knew nothing about maintenance in a warehouse setting and they trained him. But guess who they decided NOT to hire? What a fucking load of horse shit this job market is there's always someone more qualified than you that somehow manages to take the job you thought was yours.
