I’m sick of hearing the toxic comments, especially from people in position of power, calling their workers and workplace their “second family.” We are all replaceable. Family members, when they’re lost, aren’t. For American workers, just remember that this Independence Day weekend before you go and check your email. If you left your job tomorrow, you’d be replaced in days. Whether you are a son, mother, grandmother, or something else in between; enjoy your family. Because your “second family” isn’t what matters.

Richard Wolff & The General Strike U.S.
Many have posted to r/antiwork over past months seeking to organize a general strike, or asking about efforts underway to do so. As is commonly repeated, strikes require organization and solidarity, supported by robust relationships and local interactions. If you are interested in a general strike, and have not yet learned much about the topic, then please consider listening to a discussion between academic Richard Wolff and activist group Moneyless Society. The discussion is longer than some, but addresses a variety of issues relating to the broader topic. If you commute to work, then listening during your commute would help claim back some the time you surrender to the system. About halfway through, after roughly 27 minutes, the conversation shifts from evaluating the reasons for capitalism being inadequate to meet the needs and demands of workers, toward reviewing the challenges associated with organizing general strikes and the efforts underway so far.
What am I supposed to do now?
I just lost my job a month ago. Applying for a ton of stuff, not getting any interviews. I am in school to finish my degree, but won’t be done for a while (like it is even gonna matter). SCOTUS rejects student loan forgiveness, groceries costs are through the roof, jobs want to offer barely above minimum wage. I did things “the right way” and took 11 years off of work to concentrate on my kids. I was always a good student and employee. I am so tired of doing what conventional wisdom says to do and still being screwed. I feel like just screaming into the void and going to bed with a bag of Skittles. And what kills me is that I know there are SO many others that have it a lot worse. I feel bad for everyone. What kind of life are my kids going to…
This is a genuine question guys, are there others who have absolutely no jobs in mind when they think about their career paths? I've been in the rat race for a couple of years now since leaving university, I work in banking/finance, and I'm already wanting to leave it. The trouble is, there is literally nothing I want to do. Zilch. I've looked at things like public sector rather than working for the man in the private sector, but that usually seems so dull – local council jobs and the like. I can't bear to think of spending my life working 9-5 5 days a week, then using my weekends to do my 'bits' – cooking, cleaning, washing, ironing etc. I just see that as such a waste of life. Can anybody offer any advice? Or has anybody been in a similar position?
She missed payroll last Friday, didn't pay by Sunday, at our Monday meeting she said she didn't do it because she was “scared of money leaving” her like her “dad did”. My head was spinning after that. She still hasn't paid me either. She's paid my partner which is okay, but I'm still out and we're at the end of the following pay period now so she'll owe me like $3k by next Friday if she doesn't pay me before then. And yes, I have filed a complaint with the relevant employment authorities 🙂
Wife’s manager wants a doctor’s note!?
Hello people of Reddit. I know that some of you may think that this is business as usual, but it really surprised me, and I wanted to get your take on it. My wife caught something (cold, flu, coVID, something like that) and then caught an ear infection. She has been working every day up to today. Last night, she covered someone’s shift even though she wasn’t feeling well, and she was coughing the whole time. Two assistant managers asked her if she was all right. One of the assistant managers told her to call in today if she wasn’t feeling all right for tonight’s shift. She called the store (i listened on the other line), and the general manger picked up the call. He was very rude, asked my wife to list her symptoms, and then asked her if she was going to the doctor, told her (sarcastically) that…
I work for a franchise in California. Earlier this week I talked to my manager over the phone as she is not usually in the building and let her know my availability would be changing due to person reasons. I have been open with her as things have been changing and told her I was happy to continue working weekends. It’s not that I want to stay but I do need to continue to have some income. This workplace only has 4 employees and is “managed” by the daughter of the owner. Both owner and manager have full time jobs outside of this business. They also collect any tips that we make to pay for mistakes of previous employees and refuse to pay us before or after our “scheduled” shift. So if I come in for a 9am shift at 8:50 and there are customers at the counter I have…
So I posted about my manager giving me a hard time about giving my 2 weeks in, in my previous posts on this sub. Now my manager just posted my schedule for next week, she only does 1 week at a time not 2 weeks, and I’m on the schedule, she usually tells us sometimes the day before if we’re working that day. I specifically told her I can’t work after my 2 weeks, since my internship starts. Yet she seems to have ignored that, do I tell her to change the schedule or simply not show up. She often gaslights us all employees to work longer.
Not a voice actor
I work in customer service scheduling appointments for AC service. I've worked tons of customer service jobs, been in management, etc. and have never had a manager take issue with how I speak to customers. I've been at this job for three months and have been warned twice for my “tone” when answering calls. “Thanks for calling ____! How can I help you today?” I say this with a general customer service voice. Polite and friendly… but my manager says I sound MISERABLE. This is bizarre to me bc I don't have any complaints from customers about my service and they're the ones who would know best if it seemed like I don't want to help them?? I asked what was wrong with my voice and they just say I sound miserable and like I don't want to be there. Then they compare me to a male employee who has…
