I have been reading some of the comments and lots of people say that it is hypocritical that employees are expected to give 2 weeks notice but they employer can fire on the day. So is this true? Cause here in South Africa, which to be very honest is an awful place to live for many reasons, an employee must give 2 months notice before quitting but the employer also has to give 2 months notice to fire someone and they have to prove that it is on grounds for fair dismissal which are: -the conduct of the employee; -the capacity of the employee; -the operational requirements of the employer's business. If it is determined to be an unfair dismissal the former employer must either give the job back to the employee or pay 6 months salary to the employee. It is a long procedure with lots of bureaucracy to…
Company slowly killing me
I’m a team lead for a medical device manufacturer and after returning from a leave for health reasons, it’s clear this place is heading in a terrible direction. My boss made 3 contractors quit over the course of a week, it’s so hard to train people on surgical device manufacturing. My unit makes shit money compared to the others so we’re largely ignored in terms of improvements to our line. Before the contractors quit it was announced that a ton of our staff were being laid off. A lot of team leads and quality technicians were let go as were moving to have quality ops handled by assemblers. So I’m tasked with having to train new quality techs because these changes will not be done by the end of this month when people are let go. The unit that makes the most money recently changed management and the manager has…

I work remote for a company and connect to their offices through my computer to access all my work files. A few days ago a power inturuption happened in their offices that made it so I couldnt work during my usual work hours. Now the few times that has happened in the past I would NOT have to make up those missing hours and still get paid. Now out of the blue HR sends a message saying we have to make up those missing hours in the next week or over the weekend. I feel like since I am not the one unavailible to work that this shouldnt be the case. I had to stay home close to ky computer and check my mail/teams constantly you know. So is this legit should I spend 6 hours this weekend working?
How to leave a Pshyco Boss?
I work in a small civil engineering company where “we are a family” is like a morning prayers. Recently one of my co workers who was leading a department (basically buit that team) wanted to leave for a job with 40k additional pay and work from home.My boss (also engineer/owner) has totally lost it with the guy and is threatening him with law suits , calling the new employer to ask them to not poach his guy.Since he put his 2 week notice he fights with him daily and after 8 days of torture that guy said “sue me” and left.My Boss' whole argument is that I taught you everything you will use that for my competitors. I am in a exact same situation in a different engineering department where I built a team ,established all the procedures and trained everyone. He keeps on telling me how fortunate I am…

Not quite sure how to feel
I just don't understand how people can go from one day saying, “We're tight on money everyone. No overtime for anyone for a while. We will send you home if you're getting close.” To the next day saying, ” If you're a lead, supervisor, manager, or above, guess what….. You guys are all getting raises!!!” There's definitely more to this situation but, this particular event stuck with me.
Always record phone calls from work!
I tell every young person starting work this valuable lesson. Paper trails are vital. If a manager or boss usual uses email and text to communicate and then out of the blue calls you, record that call. They about to say or do something that they don’t want proof of. Best example I can provide is when my boss asked for volunteers for weekend work and we only had two volunteers. I get a phone call the next day after work that says the weekend shift was made mandatory by the plant manager. He didn’t know I had that call recorded and I brought it up to the plant manager who said he never made it mandatory. That years I negotiated the largest pay raise I ever got.
