I started this job about a year and a half ago, my hours are 9-5 and we get a 45min paid lunch. Recently, they told us that, to “align across teams” we would be going to an unpaid 30mg lunch and we have to extend our scheduled hours to 9-5:30. This means my work hours extend 30min and I’m working an extra 45min each day with no extra pay (salaried non-exempt). Is this legal? Is there anything I can do? Sure as hell isn’t ethical. Bonus: They told us during our 1×1 to stifle the outcry, told us there’d be a team wide meeting to discuss, then when that never happened we’re told it’s now going to be an e-mail instead.
Reading everyone’s posts here, it seems obvious they all have one thing in common, it’s almost always in the US. This can be confirmed by most non US people comments that always seem to not even understand how it’s possible. If a drunk driver ran over your child, would you be anti cars or anti drunk drivers? Well sorry guys, but the US is one massive drunk driver that’s been on a bender for quite some time now. But know that there’s a reality where things are better, and this reality isn’t one where work doesn’t exist.
What is up with all the part time work?
In a sea full of jobs – ya there's a lot, but it's all only part time? Where's all the full time work? It's wild that the part time jobs are offering close to $30 a hour with less than 20hours a week but the full time is only offering less than $20 a hour? Is this some sort of company expression to the Canadian government that they're offering a “livable wage” but left out the livable amount of hours? Does anyone else notice this?
Has anyone ever faked a competing job offer in order to leverage more money from their current company and if so, how did that work out for you? My company was recently acquired by a larger/shittier Corp and so naturally several people have left. For the most part new company doesn't care but some of the more valuable ( but non-upper management like myself) employees were offered substantial raises to stay. (They didn't.) I make good money for my geographic location but mediocre for my actual job title so I'm thinking of asking my boss if he'll match my “offer” without officially putting in my two weeks or anything. Is this a terrible idea? I am asking here because a lot of people I know are stuck in the “never rock the boat, don't bite the hand, we should appreciate our overlords” bs that I no longer ascribe to. I…
Retail sucks and I don’t know what to do
It sucks. I really thought I found a job I could at LEAST make two years with. I was doing 60 hours for the last year or so before one of the managers had to leave temporarily. Since then I keep hitting the negatives in my bank account every two months or so now. I want to make money. I want to do something more than just retail. Now I might just have to file for unemployment and it just sucks. No one can live on 26 hours every two weeks. I'm just great full I live with my folks….
I took this job because I was fired from my last one (for stupid reasons that happened over a year prior) and was desperate for work. Huge paycut. I supervise 2 direct reports who have serious issues with authority. My boss is a micromanager, and the 3 of them are constantly arguing with me stuck in the middle. I'm so sick of this. I'm not going to be using this place on my resume. When I find my new job should I give my 2 weeks notice or just say I quit effective immediately the next time one of these stupid fights comes up?
Seriously. What's with the bovine fecal matter? We get it. You've have done an outlandish investment in these office buildings, You are trying to justify the expenses and are now stuck masquerading it as a bunch of semantics about “culture”, “Performance” and “collaboration”. Just cut it out. You are not fooling anyone. But you need to justify the investment, right? Ok. Let's make a deal. Give us a piece of the action, because truth being told, we are in a situation that we can both benefit. Make us partial owners of the building. If I own part of a piece of expensive real-estate, It would be a good motivator. Whaddaya say?
Company has a tax write off office in the carribean. They are sending us there for a “team building week” but are requiring us to work while we are there. Am I wrong for being upset?
