Thoughts on Sunday Times Best Place to work awards(UK)

Is it a red flag? I kinda think so. The best place to work award requires a participation fee.  It is doubtful, no matter what the Times may say, that once you have paid to be placed in this glorified listicle that you won’t make it on there somewhere.   This is a valueless metric, as I have worked in 2 of these “illustrious” organisations and an ugly pattern emerges from the people in the organisation clamouring to taste this smegma of recognition Perception is more important than Reality. The perception team (or however you’re wanting to brand HR) are uniformly concerned , not with the wellbeing of employees, but with covering up their screams.    Without doubt these places will also have glassdoor scores in the 4+ range because the employees have been “asked”, possibly at gunpoint,  to review bomb glassdoor after some brave soul has revealed the ugly truth…

Parents in retail – how do you do it?

I’ve been in retail for over 20 years, I’ve had all kinds of roles. Since I’ve had kids I’d been able to be a stay at home mom and have my own business that unfortunately closed during Covid. After that, I’ve been lucky enough to find roles that were Monday – Friday or with only the occasional weekend shift. I was also in roles where our shifts would typically end by 5:00 at the latest, so I could always make after school pick up. Now, after leaving a very toxic store, I’ve been able to land a management position. Everything seems okay so far, except for the hours. The earliest shift has me getting home around 7:00pm, way too late for pickup. But most days they have me scheduled so I won’t get home until 8:00 or 9:00, in which case I won’t get to see my kids at all.…

IT hell

Just had this interview with a major tech company that was basically labled one of the best tech companies to work for in the area. the manager came off kinda of rude and disrespectful by saying that compensation is set at 19.50/hr and he cant offer anything more since he doesnt want any conversations about why people are getting paid more for the same job. no remote no hybrid not even considering it. like wtf . that was the first red flag. second he tells me that this job is very difficult and very demanding and extremely stressful and people quit from day one and if im not ready for that i dont have to take job. the job is basically help desk tier 2 . he then continues to ask me detailed questions about routers and switches and active directory. questioning my skills and in a way felt like…

I'm pissed off because I learnt that after I offered to do my partners aunt a favour she intended to profit from it by charging someone else for my free labour. Complicated but here goes. People involved: me, my partner (T), her dad (M), her aunt (by marriage, now a widow, H), one other who like me offered to assist for free (J, one of H's tenants). I ive with my partner in a caravan in her fathers (large) garden, it's affordable, and, at least in the summer a nice place to be. Skipping work tomorrow to attend field trip with my 5th grader.

So here’s some context. Work has cut out our OT and are only allowing us to work 40 hours per week and still meet our sales quotas. They’ve also cut down on the inbound leads (inbound calls) because management states that we’re not working the outbound leads anymore. Morale has gone way down for a job that pays a base salary of $32k per year. My 5th grade daughter has her final elementary school field trip tomorrow and yesterday I told her I couldn’t attend because of work. She then tells me, “didn’t you tell mom that if you died, your boss would replace you in a month?”. WTH? She must have heard a conversation I had with my wife weeks ago. Needless to say, I was able to get approval from her school to chaperone tomorrow and I’m calling out. Work will just have to wait another day.
