Maybe I Do Hate Working

For about two years now I have been selling jewelry at a pretty prestigious family owned company. I got into this job because it seemed fun, and somewhat low stress while finishing up college. This was my first job after being laid off due to covid from my last job (a VERY prestigious designer/luxury brand) and I was excited to be back around people in a retail environment. I instantly fell in love with the atmosphere, work culture, and the people who worked there. After all, I do not like leaving jobs or bouncing around very much, I like consistency and comfort. Fast forward about 1 year, I decide that I want to turn this job into a career. After numerous discussions about how I can grow into a management training position, it started to feel like a carrot was being dangled in front of me. I would continually impress…

A WTF Ultimatum from Boss

So, I work for a company that does special services for a government institution. We typically are contracted out to provide services, different departments, different services. Our director is new to the job and has been on a power trip for a while, micromanaging and whatnot. Today we had a mandatory meeting where the director essentially gave us 24 hours to decide if we wanted to stay employed there or to move on. All because the director has heard from different departments about being overworked and underpaid. And that if we are looking for a job with a job description, this is not the place for “you.” Luckily I have already accepted a job offer last week.

Mass Shooting Workplace

I work in a building where a mass shooting recently occurred. I was not there when the shooting occurred, but easily could have been. The entire situation has rattled me and my mental health is declining. (I already struggle with clinical depression and multiple anxiety disorders). The company I work for is deeply flawed and problematic, and I’ve been pushing myself to just hold on and keep going for months. Well, this shooting was the last straw. I have surpassed the limit of what I can take, I no longer feel safe in that building, and my fears of being a victim of a mass shooting have increased. So you know what I did? I finally asked my employer what options there are for me. I told them my mental health is declining and I cannot be in the building. I asked if I could work remotely. Most of my…

Contractor employee with 11 years experience of what I do, getting told to train inexperienced under qualified person from competitor.

Big corp that I am working for, instead of allowing my parent company to hire on another qualified person with experience at what I do, they instead turned down offer for second position and hired another person from a direct competitor to sit in the desk next to me and do the same job I do. The person is trying futilely to copy what I am doing asking many obvious questions and overall does not know the first thing at this. Our workgroup manager started spouting “one team” and “one large family” propaganda and how we all should work together going forward.

What attracts laborers these days?

Open for discussion- I have a friend who owns a small business doing outdoor construction type work (lower skill). They don’t have resources for benefits at this point, but they’re advertising pay well above market for the kind of work, and getting nothing. We’ve spitballed ideas, but I figured I’d ask reddit. What are some perks or out of the box benefits that would make someone choose a labor type job over like a retail or manufacturing environment?

“It’s your responsibility to make it to work”

I'm going to preface this by saying: My direct boss is wonderful. She's done a lot for me and my team and this is not as all about her. This is about the person over her. I'll call him S. Also, I have contemplated not posting this because i don't want any kind of retaliation, but fuck it. Backstory to all of this: I lost my aunt a few weeks back after a month-long battle in the hospital. She had a funeral a few days ago. The company I am at does not give bereavement pay unless it is your parent, child, or spouse, so I took vacation time for her funeral as well as multiple times during the month before her passing. Now, she and I lived together for 10 years, and were quite close. That, among other more personal things, have caused me to take her sudden…

Hired to work at a mostly Spanish speaking location.

Said multiple times during my interview that I only speak English. Now their all annoyed with me for not speaking Spanish and threatening to write me up for it. Gonna file a complaint but this is Texas I highly doubt it will do anything except waste my time. People say “just look for another job”. That's hard when your shity poverty job changes your schedule every week so you always work a split weekend and at least 6 days in a row. Im loosing my mind. It's like retail settings are trying to make you freak out and quit. Between incompetant managers and poverty wages it's like their trying to make it all fail on purpose. I want to cry.

I am so sick of my toxic boss

My boss tried to change my shift last minute last night from 7-11 to 8-12. Now normally I'd be okay with the extra time to sleep in, but I had an interview today at 12 I scheduled way before this. Apparently one of my coworkers needs to be trained to open the store and this is “the only day she can do it”. We ended up on settling on me coming in at 8 and leaving at 11 and my coworker who's being trained to stay until 12. So my shift becomes 8-11, her's becomes 7-12. It gets better. Turns out when my boss said “this is the only day she can do it” she wasn't referring to the coworker bring trained. She was referring to another coworker who she wants to train her being available. Apparently, the coworker being trained literally works all week. Now why is that last…

Just had a client call me to tell me he has relapsed on meth, is in a mental health crisis and purchased a 45 because he feels threatened by the other people in his apartment complex.

I am not trained to deal with that sort of situation at all. My organization has not provided training as I have requested or safety measures for me while I perform home-visits. Feeling overwhelmed.
