I’ve reached Quasi-Middle Class. It shouldn’t be this hard.

I have a 2015 BMW in good shape that my wife and I share. I have an 800 sqft house on a shared lot. I can walk to 1 park and i have a nearby bus stop. I can afford to pay my bills, eat good food, and spend some money on fun. I can take a moderate vacation (ie roadtrip somewhere in state) once a year. I work from home so I can actually take some degree of care of myself. I have a PhD and I work in tax accounting. My wife is a JD working as a trial attorney. We are both about 3 years into our careers. Three years into professional careers after getting advanced degrees, and that's our upper limit. It is fucking insane that this is what it takes. My dad painted cars at a body shop and my mom stayed home, and they…

Quit my job after a shooting threat.

There is a lot to break down here so I will do it as efficiently as I can. On Saturday, as some of you might know, there was a shooting in Allen, TX that resulted in 9 people dead including the gunman. I did not work in the outlets where it happened, but it is 20 minutes away from another big shopping mall where I do work. My co-worker got a call from her mom and I knew something was wrong by the look on her face. She went to the back, and when I came to see what was wrong, she was hysterical. This was right after what happened in Allen and we were the closest mall to it. We had heard so many different stories from people online saying there was a second shooter or there was a group and rumors of where they were going next. I…

Headlines today for my Feed

I usually consume my news via Linkedin. Today's headlines have me furious for several reasons, but I'm just coming here to vent. The drive to force RTO for NYC employees has me especially heated. https://preview.redd.it/lcvqhb4hfnya1.png?width=299&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=70f578596ee177a27efbcf7f92819454ee5c6670

I’m losing faith in my work, and I need to vent!

A few weeks ago, we were informed that the company wants to reduce overtime, so they made it mandatory that we get overtime approved the week before. So far, so good – Today, I was informed by my boss, that a coworker complained about me leaving on time, although there might be some work left to be done. For better understanding, it's a document review job, these coworkers and I only share a few tasks, and even those tasks are clearly assigned to specific people. When I clock out, my part is 100% done, and I usually even do some of their work, as long as there is something to do when I check if I can leave (I don't wait around waiting for some work to maybe show up). Also, another coworker quit last year, and they decided not to fill his position again, and it shows. Making such…

Wife’s new job delayed her start date by a month.

Something went wrong on their end and now her start date is being pushed to next month because they only do orientation once a month. I've never been in a situation like this before and am not sure how to handle it. Is there anything that can be done?

I think this subreddit will really enjoy this show! Really good animated drama about working for a corporate dystopian future on Mars. ( Essentially being laid off during Covid)

Severance pay – tenure question

So I just got laid off from my company and they offered me a severance package that I am currently disputing. I worked for this company previously for six years, was gone for three years, and came back to only worked there for a year before I got laid off. When I was rehired, I negotiated to keep my previous tenure, so I would accrue PTO and pay health insurance at my six year rate. That was approved even though the company policy states that if you were gone longer than a year, previous tenure would not apply. My severance package is only based on one year of service. I disputed it and they still came back with the same result. Is there anything further I can do? This is a difference of about $30k, so I of course would like to keep fighting it if I can. TIA
