Been a lurker here, predominantly, for a while now. I finally have a dumb story to share. P.s. I hate the term mansplained because women do this crap too but I felt like it was the appropriate term for this situation. A little background…I was laid off last month from my job as an accounting analyst and it super sucked and I was bummed as heck because I actually loved my job. However, I was being drastically underpaid and drastically overworked. I am about to graduate from my undergrad (Financial Analysis) in May and so the balancing act was horrible. This week I was hired for a similar role with even stronger data science duties than my last role, higher pay, and if I work overtime I actually get paid for it. We mean nothing
I’m in the catering and serving industry. I’ll be On-Call let’s say from 9 to 5. Then, something comes up, or my coworker(s) is slow, and they expect me to stay till 6 or 7 until everything is done. Now if I leave because “I was scheduled until 5”, I’m leaving work unfinished and I can expect management to hit me with that “well if you can’t stay late we just won’t depend on you” (aka less calls) The thing is these people like to stay an hour or more every chance they get. They work, then they go home. Not me. I have a life, and hobbies, and go to school, and I don’t wanna hang around for a few f*****g dollars.
Where do I go from here?
I have an associates degree in computer information systems but I can't code worth shit. Fresh out out of college I started working at a call center for a well known bank and worked my way up to the elite department speaking to celebrities and their law firms about their credit cards and filing interest deferments for individuals in the military. Eventually I had a mental break after 5 years of that and in 2018 had to leave. I was self employed doing food delivery for a few years and ended up at an office taking calls for a very well known lens company. I've been there for a year but i'm fucking miserable and overworked. They can't keep people and I am so done taking calls. If I have to say “thank you for calling xxx” for another year I'm going to lose my shit. My resume is…
