For example, an employer could theoretically say that you didn’t turn up to do x, y and z, and that caused us $$$ so now we’re suing you. It also make all union strikes illegal because union strikes are structured to cause the employer a loss. I only know about this because I heard about it on Adam Conover’s podcast – Factually
Venting about my last job
My quality of life and health became so much better when I quit my last job. I used to work in a warehouse that distributed industrial parts and machinery. My job was to take products from totes on a conveyor and package them for delivery. The warehouse had little ventilation, no AC (we had personal fans at least) or heat, and dim lights. Most work stations had an LED light strip on the desk to illuminate the work space, but mine did not. My supervisor was a very imposing man who loved to critique my productivity. He would come up unannounced behind me and simply start telling me about how I wasn't working fast enough or critiquing some other small detail. The minimum number of orders a worker was expected to process an hour was 70. So I was expected to package individual orders or parts of an order in…
Trying for brevity here, otherwise I’ll keep going on and on, but need to provide enough details for you all. My dream: Start a business that allows me to shift work conditions for the better and “change the world” (really just the US). Lead by example with 4 day work week, 32 hours, 100% pay, better benefits and programs (i.e. parental leave, two week company holiday in summer), and cap executive pay to help raise the tide for all employees. No more C suites making 200:1. Productivity has increased so much more than wage growth and benefits haven’t trickled down. Challenges: To do this with just one company would require me to grow a company significantly and fast. I have a number of ideas but not sure any that would grow to the level that makes us a major player in the overall landscape. Other companies are starting to do…
Talking about how much you get paid is taboo, forbidden, looked down upon. Why? It’s not about bragging or complaining, it is about comparing. Employers do not want you talking about your salary or wages because they don’t want to pay everyone a fair wage. They’re going to compensate you and your colleagues as little as possible so they can profit more. Fuck that. Let’s share what we earn. Comment here with your occupation and income, include any benefits that come with it (insurance, retirement, pto, bonuses, etc). Again, this is not meant to be a thread for you to flex. It’s to help your fellow working class members see if their employer is fucking them over.
This recent viral post talked about how office work that can be done in a few hours or weeks are scheduled to be completed in weeks or months. In addition to this, if workers got their work done faster or got it done before deadlines, they'd actually be punished by their temp agencies or bosses. And this baffles me. If capitalists are so insistent on cutting any corners possible to maximize profits while minimizing any costs, then why aren't they allowing their office culture to become more streamline to minimize the number of employees necessary to perform relatively easy jobs? The only thing I can think of is; Real Estate. It's essentially the same reason why businesses and politicians are so insistent on everyone coming back into the office despite how easily the job can be done from home and how remote work cuts down on unnecessary costs and time…
Like, you might as well make them wrestle for it wet-T-shirt style.
Vacay justification!
My boss thinks me wanting to take a weeks vacation in the same month as I already requested 2 lousy days is excessive at one time. I have the time, and it doesn't conflict with other's request. I shouldn't have to tell her my mother is sick and I want to see her before she dies. It's personal and I don't want to start crying at work.
PLEASE knock some sense into me
im really sitting here worried about calling off of work last minute at my barely above minimum wage fast food job because we're understaffed and i feel bad for potentially making my coworker have to take on some extra work for a night. someone PLEASE beat some sense into me it's my boss's own damn fault that the place is understaffed because he's sleazy and treats us like cattle, plus i've never taken a day off once and i always pick up extra shifts if i'm able to.. i shouldn't be sitting here beating myself up for wanting one day to myself yet here i am for some reason, good lord 🤦️
