Company Towns

Elon Musk isn’t even hiding that he’s trying to bring back the days of company towns: https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2023/03/elon-musk-wants-his-own-town-in-texas.html

hip hop or age reference?

So our management sent an email to our “teams” one is “teamtwo@” or “bostonsales@” for instance. Another is either referencing a rap artist or a general age group. Is this inappropriate?

Swearing

Work in a factory in a pretty rural southern small town. We cuss a LOT. We have a new boss who has made it a rule that we are no longer allowed to swear. I didn't see anything in the employee handbook about cursing exactly. The closest thing was “offensive language”. I've been there from the start (~8 months) and no one has EVER said we couldn't and I spoke to the leaving boss who said he never cared either. We don't have any customers as it's a factory and it's an overnight shift so there are about 20 of us in the building during our shift. Does anyone have insight on if the new boss has legal right to take any course of action against an employee?

Lawyer turned security guard

Hi all. I’m in need of some work-related advice. I’m a 24M Law school graduate who’s been unemployed for the past 1.5 years due to mental health issues. I luckily don’t have any debt as I had full scholarships to university and law school, and have enough savings to sustain me for a few years. So, money isn’t a real issue for me, and I don’t plan on starting a family. My mental health issues make it difficult to focus on everyday tasks. I also don’t have the energy to work as a lawyer anymore. I’ve been getting treatment but not much has improved. So, I was thinking that the ideal job for me would be one that would require low effort, not much thinking, and not much contact with other people as I have a bad case of social anxiety. A job that came to mind is being a…

Absences must include a reason?

Our new PTO system went live and the training guide indicates a reason must be included with the request. Is the the norm across most companies? We never had to do this before and I find it a bit invasive.

Nightmare staff lift…

I work in a 5 star hotel and we have 1 nightmare staff lift that everyone has to share. Let me list the lifts “quirks” that nobody has bothered to fix and that we have to work around. – it looks like a death trap – level 3 button does not work – doors must be fully shut before pressing any button for lift to work – to go up to a certain level: press 4 and then quickly press the levels number you wish to go to (e.g. press 4 then 2 to go to level 2) – if you find you are outside the lift and you call it and it doesn't come. The lift is stuck on ground level and needs to be reset (this happens frequently). Walk down to ground level. Hold down stop button for 5 seconds to reset otherwise the lift will not move.…

No tips for 6 months. What do I do?

Working part time at a new pizza place in town for almost 9 months now. I know the owner is doing well because this is his third restaurant he has opened. However, he has not given me or my coworkers any of my tips since November, and when he did give them to me, he made us split them with the whole crew (even non customer-facing), including him. Which isn’t fair because I’m very kind to customers and making most of the tips in the first place. But besides, that was better than no tip at all.
