Pay vs. environment. Finding acceptance, or continue the chase.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, mostly due to my 4% yearly raise. Im a CNC machinist in Denver. I chased my career here to work for a government contractor making satellite parts. Very quickly my gut told me to run, but I stayed for the “career growth”. Long story short, it fucking ruined me and left me with a lot of apathy about really growing and chasing my career (the passion and growth part at least). I left that job for something that was way beneath me, but paid more, and stayed for about 6 weeks before taking a few months off and dipping into savings. But alas, I did find a shop that is the exact opposite of toxic environment. It’s relaxed as shit, my boss is a few years older and does show appreciation and value, you can talk to him like a friend, joke…

Had to go through a recruiter… for a volunteering gig

Anyone else had this happen? Baffling to have to sit on a half hour zoom call with what was basically a corporate recruiter after offering to volunteer with a big nonprofit. Then lol, I didn’t even get a rote rejection email like a job app would typically receive. At least wasting my time & ghosting me let me know to take my good citizen free time elsewhere!

I will start a retail job next week, any advice from people from experience in retail?

I worked in an office all my life (got a degree and started working while attending university). After several years I quit the office job because the working conditions were simply unacceptable and a way worse than when I started (at the beginning it was ok). Any general advice about retail? How to do the best with collegues? Things that I have to take care particularly or pay attention? Thank you

Update: Is being available from 8am-5pm weekdays via Teams considered “on call” for a part time employee?

Thank you everyone for your advice and input on this issue. I spoke to the woman's whose role I'm transitioning into yesterday. When I asked her about being on call and her experience with it, she said she was able to “negotiate” being on call down to checking into Teams 1x an hour and responding to any messages she saw at that time and/or sending a “I've seen this and will get back to you at this time” to any messages that pinged in. I told her that still felt on call to me, even if I was “only” checking in one time an hour. I told her about my idea to tell my boss “here is my schedule and I'll respond to messages during my scheduled hours but otherwise I'm offline.” She was not optimistic that my boss would go for it. She said, “so boss doesn't think checking…

Sign my petition plz

I recently quit my job of three years due to a serious hand injury that required significant surgery. When i put out plastic “silverware” the day of the injury (a big Valentine's meal) due to loss of sensation in my fingers, my boss chased me out with his fist raised after i told him I might as well quit after revealing that indeed, the tendon was surely severed. He expected me to serve nonetheless. What I am ashamed to admit is that I never reported the abuse, often of a sexual nature (I since have) That being said, my last three weeks involved getting guests to sign a petition to maintain outdoor seating. This seating is not only dangerous to guests, but also to employees, and likely added to my joint instability. I have today launched a counter petition against this restaurant. https://www.ipetitions.com/petition/pera-bistro-no-outside-seating I've worked as server, bartender, FOS manager…

Manager wants everyone to go back to the office once every two weeks even though I was hired as a full time remote employee

The office is outside of the city, about 1h30 commute because I dont have a car. The reason he wants everyone back to the office is to create a team bond and make employees feel better. Going to the office was optional for everyone the last 4 years and nobody came. Nobody quit and the finance director told us that the team has never been more productive than now. The only argument he gave me when I reminded him I was hired as a full time remote worker was: '' It's only once every two weeks, that's not much to ask''” I really like my life/work balance right now and I dont really care about going back to the office, It makes me feel anxious and I dont care for my cowokers. I never worked in a office since I gratuated during covid. I'm really irratated by this situation, am…

Don’t Needlessly Insult People who Personally don’t Prefer WFH

On the recent post about Gen Z supposedly not preferring WFH, there are a lot of comments getting in the weeds, calling anybody who wants to show up at their office or workplace weirdos, outcasts, scabs, shills etc. Really simple concept here—solidarity among workers. I need to go to a place because I’m fucking autistic, and personally need a material reason to form human connections or I otherwise won’t. That’s where I’m at in life right now, and I’d prefer to not be pushed away from a labor movement for it. I FULLY support the majority of people (including zoomers) who are favorable to WFH. Please be civil and kind to your neighbors

Feels like my manager constantly puts hurdles in my way instead of clearing a path.
