They Hurt the Wrong People
Thoughts on unpaid training for Airline.
After a long recruitment process, I was hired as a flight attendant at a major-ish airline. Everything was going okay until they presented the idea of doing 50+ hours of unpaid online training, which you have roughly 2 weeks to complete. There is some pretty intense modules, including some seemingly critical information that they require you to memorize prior to starting ground training school. This makes me feel uneasy. Seems like a lot to ask of someone you’re not paying. By some accounts, if you don’t have the information memorized by day 1, you may be removed from training. Is there anyone here that has gone through a similar process? What are your thoughts?
Remote side hustle?
I work remotely as part of a 3 person team. I handle 90% of the department's work, and finish it all in around 20 hours – but I have to be on and active for 40 hours per week. This leads to a lot of frustrating down time, because as a neurodivergent human, my brain needs stimulation or it is physically uncomfortable for me. Let's just say I can completely sympathize with every toddler throwing a tantrum for having to wait for something…. Although, I do have slightly better coping skills at this stage in my life. 🙂 My leadership team is useless at leading. They have no clue what is going on in the department unless I tell them. I stayed quiet for a bit and enjoyed decompressing, but now I'm bored. I have been very direct and vocal with my leadership team about how bored I am and…
Yesterday I noticed a coworker of mine filming me, and I asked him why, he told me he was doing a funny video that would be shared between us and two other people at work (that were in it). After hesitating, I agreed. He continued filming randomly, but I took his word that it would be shared between us. However once it was done he sent it to one of my coworkers whom I was fine with watching, but he stared laughing out loud and everyone wanted to watch it. I was a bit embarrassed because it was a stupid video, with a background sound. Again, he promised he wouldn’t share it with anyone. Fast forward to today, a coworker mentioned the video, then I realised that he sent it to him without my consent. It’s a joke video, nothing sexual but I still felt it was not cool being…
Hey there, antiworkers! I'm in a bit of a bind and could use some advice. Right now, I'm working at Starbucks and DM-ing professionally in D&D on the side (Inbox open if interested. Always be selling, amirite?). But I'm barely making ends meet and I'm tired of being stuck in bottom-of-the-barrel jobs. Besides D&D, what I'm passionate about is data analytics. I've been doing it as a hobby since I was a kid and I've taught myself SQL, Excel and Tableau, but I can't afford to get any certifications or degrees right now. I'm confident that I could excel in an entry-level position, but my resume screams food service management. I've applied to dozens of jobs, but haven't had any luck. So, I'm considering falsifying my resume to highlight my data analytics skills. I know it's risky, but desperate times call for desperate measures. Have any of you ever lied…
Is it impossible to be an ethical boss?
https://www.bigquitenergy.com/p/the-levels-of-being-a-cool-boss Devon Price (one of the authors of this sub's intro reading) said on instagram last year that it's impossible. I had fancied myself a cool enough boss, but I think in the end I agree. This post discusses and maps out what goes into being a cool (if not fully ethical) boss. Curious if you all have had (or tried to be) “cool” bosses and what that means to you.
What are your thoughts on sales people?
I recently had a conversation with a friend who’s very anti-work. He mentioned sales people are basically landlords. They provide nothing of value and make money off other people’s labor. My response is that companies without good sales teams can’t sell their products and the labor us wasted. Also, sales people frequently work absurd hours and are on call 24/7/365. It’s also a job that people can get without a degree or fancy background. Friend still said sales should disappear and everyone should sell to coops that distribute goods as needed. But that coop would basically need their own version of sales people to distribute the goods to the appropriate people and collect money. Thoughts?
I agree with the first point in this article, but the REAL first one by a country mile should be “It's because you're not paying enough or you're unclear about how much you're actually paying” https://brightmatterhr.com/knowledge-centre/blogs/this-is-why-your-hiring-process-is-turning-candidates-away/
I’m the District Manager of a fast food franchise. We had a corporate award ceremony. I worked my ass off this year to achieve record profits, customer satisfaction, intense training, and opened many locations. My boss is the vice president. He won “manager of the year” and immediately at the convention I was irate but held it in. I never spoke to this man for more than 9 months of the year working for them. He steps foot into one store for only an hour once every two weeks hardly interacting with anyone. How should I handle this? TL;DR: My “boss” (position title only) won an award that should have been given to me.
