New here: have some questions

I’m just curious as to what “antiwork” actually means, I’m aware of “universal basic income” I was just more curious on how an “antiwork” society would exactly function. Is it still capitalistic? Etc etc I’m sure there will be many different types of “antiwork” societal ideas and I just want a general consensus.

Are employers allowed to discourage employees from discussing not paying overtime?

I was talking to a younger coworker and this is his first full time job. He said he has been working 50 hour weeks. I said at least you get time and a half for that extra ten. He had no idea what I was talking about and pulled up his paystub and he wasn’t getting any time and half. I tried to explain to him that there must be some mistake as that is the law as he is not salary. Then a supervisor that is neither of our bosses tells me to “you need to send him away” as we were talking at my desk. I thought this guy wanted to talk to me about something privately so I ask what’s up? He said nothing just you can’t be talking to him about things like that. It’s not your problem. I said it’s illegal and he doesn’t understand.…

Workplace Disasters

I live in a small rural town that doesn't have a lot going for it. Local jobs are hard to come by and a lot of people have to commute 40 minutes to an hour to get to work in one of the next 3 towns over where there are decent paying jobs (cost of fuel is still horrible here too). One of the larger employers, a retail store and gas station and a popular stop for truckers that was only 15 minutes outside of town burnt to the ground this morning. Two fast food chains, the convenience store, and the restaurant – all gone. Anyways, guess what the employers are doing for their employees who are suddenly out of work? NOTHING Instead, they notified all of the employees they are being terminated due to “lack of work” so they can file for unemployment. I was talking to my neighbor…

Been Blindsided

There are certainly worst jobs out there, but I'm still upset. I've been here 2 years and I've had to put up 2 aggressive alcoholics who have placed most of their workload on me. I was thrown into the deep end when I first started, luckily the first left 4 months in for better horizons (good luck with that.) The second has been here for nearly 10 years and happily gets away with it. Only now have we finally got rid of him, it is insanely hard to get fired in this job. For a company who prides itself on 'Employee Growth' – it certainly all talk and no bite. I do 15 hours a week, not good hours if I want to live by myself but the pay is just about fine but there's always room for improvement. I gained the courrage to request if I can move onto…

My Job refuses to work with me on any type of leave

So further details. I work for a concrete company in NJ, I’ve been with them about 9 months. I know that I do not qualify for FMLA. My Fiancé is due to give birth in April. When I asked my HR if there’s any possible way to take 2-3 weeks off I was told that there’s no leave for union employees and that I don’t qualify for fmla and would need to talk to my immediate manager to see if he’d allow me to take time off. Fast forward I talk to the manager and he says they won’t give me any leave because “ if we do it for you we have to do it for everyone”. If I call off they will fire me for excessive absences. So I’m SOL less than a month before my child is born lol. We as drivers make them so much money…

3 opinions, one question

Owner: I run my own bar, I let my employees call out, I don't fire people for dumb shit. Cook: I work for somebody I personally know, who takes my work problems seriously, who tries to treat everybody with some grace, so I'm ok with taking on extra bullshit because he is too. Me: Ok, sounds copacetic, as long as the money and lifestyle works out. You and your boss stressing about the same things and going home at the same time only works if you're both going home to what you want and need. Cook: Actually, he's only at the bar for about 4 hours usually, but he has meetings off-site, etc. I'm only here for so many hours because on top of cooking I gotta do the schedules, maintain the kitchen equipment, order everything and deal with distributors, and handle catering for his side business. But it's ok,…

Advice request: how to emotionally disengage at work

I work remotely for a small nonprofit organization that has turned toxic. I work in fundraising and am actively job searching. Work sucks and I can see the ways that my coworkers undermine me, etc. but I can't help but feel upset and stressed out everyday as a result. How can I emotionally detach and get over it so that I can suck it all up until I find something better? Thank God I work remotely but it's still hard to not let the bullshit get me down. I care deeply about the mission of the organization and our implementing teams and I get paid well, but my HQ coworkers and boss just suck so much…

Is work or workers’ comp the bigger scam?

Long rant. tl;dr: WC is a scam and it's not discussed enough just how screwed up the system is. I got a back injury at work in 2020. Three years later I'm still dealing with this shitshow. Approval for appointments, procedures, surgeries, etc. can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, depending entirely on if I'm released to work or if I'm at home receiving disability (bet you can't guess which one makes them work faster). I've had countless hours of physical therapy, multiple rounds of injections, and two major surgeries with a third on the table since the other two didn't really work. I used to be a really active person, which is why I chose a job in physical labor and actually enjoyed it. Today I walk with a cane and can't even stand long enough to take a shower. I also experience severe pain…
