A colleague of mine is having a baby at the end of March. She met with HR to get her FMLA paperwork started. They marked the reason for leave as “serious health condition” instead of “birth and care of a newborn.” They then told her she had to get her supervisor’s approval for any time beyond 6 weeks. I thought FMLA guaranteed 12 weeks of job protected leave. Does anyone know what might be going on here?

i have to sit at my desk all day even if i finished all my work and have nothing else to do. basically i just sit around and wait until i’m given a task or a client calls me. for anyone else who is the in the same position, what do you do to pass the time? i thought that reading books online would be a good idea since it’s just a bunch of text and no one can really tell it’s not actual work unless they’re hovering over my shoulder. but, i don’t know of any websites i can download or buy e-books. i can’t listen to audiobooks because we can’t wear headphones. any suggestions? thanks!
I might get in trouble today
I have a lazy manager. He doesn't like doing the schedule or other managers' duties, likes to take long lunches and leaves early. He will not allow anyone else to do the schedule, though. When I was hired on, I was part-time with another part-time job. My first jobs schedule always came out at noon on Tuesday (unless there was a problem). Current manager didn't like that because he liked posting his schedule on Tuesdays, which now he was being forced to post it later. Within a month he offered me a full time position, making me the only non-managar position with full time. I didn't think much off it at the time. I came to realize it was because he didn't like playing with my first job. He told me I would have to quit my other job, I didn't. I went down to one day a week. He…
Any labor attorneys here in western PA?
I have a friend who is five months pregnant and in upper middle management. Loves the company she works for but the relationship with her boss has become so bad that she’s crying by 9am daily and is concerned that it’s negatively impacting her pregnancy. She’s on multiple anxiety and depression medications already. She doesn’t think the boss is doing anything illegal as they treat everyone poorly. She would really love to just leave the company but her company offers 12 weeks paid maternity leave and if she leaves now and gets another job then she isn’t protected by FMLA. She is hoping to pay an attorney for some time to figure out if there’s a way for her be able to take leave early or if the behavior might somehow be enough for them to pay out her maternity leave now so they can just split early. Willing to…
Zero desire to be a boss
I like only having to worry about my own productivity. I would hate having to stress over managing the workloads of people under me. Of course, supervisor roles will tend to pay higher but I can’t envision myself ever accepting such a position
how to find higher paying work
like the title says, im trying to find higher paying work. i currently earn $15/hr with guaranteed 40hrs a week. overtime isn't common, but is encouraged when available (ie someone calls out). i have 4yrs customer service experience, and currently work in a remote call center. i love working from home because this is allowing me to also study for my bachelors degree in video game art and development. i have an associates in psychology, too. i'm doing my best to update my resume and keep checking job boards for higher paying jobs, but it seems impossible to find. any advice? i'd love to start a business or do freelance work, but it seems so unstable that im hesitant to make the jump.
I've been working at a company for the past 10 months, when I signed my offer letter I was hired as an associate. Turns out that people hired a few years before me were hired as analysts and were the ones actually onboarding me for the position. Obviously during our peer performance evaluations, they found out that we had a higher title than them and now HR is trying to amend my contract to say that they made an administrative error and want to change my title to analyst which is literally a demotion. What do we think? (End of year bonus and pay caps are also based off our job titles)
Certainly feels that way
Indiana Docked Pay Question
A friend of mine is being threatened that she must pay a drawer shortage or be fired. The issue is that there is not actually a shortage. On her POS system, employees must manually push a button to select cash or credit. She accidentally pressed the cash option for a credit purchase. The company has the money, the drawer is just off. I’ve worked in retail management. Generally when this happens, you file a shortage report and the error is fixed. No money is lost so it isn’t a big deal. It’s annoying, but not the end of the world. My question is, can the employer force her to pay? I know in Indiana, employers cannot dock pay for drawer shortages. To get around this, the employer is telling my friend that she must pay out of pocket. Is this enforceable?
