Has anyone found a way out of the rat race? If so, how?

Wife was laid off for BS reason
My wife worked as a work-from-home insurance claims assistant. She was trained that it didn't matter where an accident occurred – it mattered only where the policy was written. If it is written in some states, she needed to transfer the call to a specialized team for those claims. She was also told that if someone gives you information that cannot be pulled up, you are to take the information and “just file and smile”. This would put it to another team to do the research on. She got a call from a person that was involved in an accident in one of the special states. They were not a client and the policy information she shared with my wife didn't pull up any information about the insured. My wife did a search on the names of the policy holder and their son (who was in the accident) but their…
Sad what a dying man has to go through…
I’m dying. I’m “lucky” enough to have a disease that has no cure or treatment. Outlook is 1-3 years tops. My father died from this disease at 53. Took him in 9 months. I’m 38. I’ll be lucky to see 40. I mention my luck because unlike some I won’t have huge medical bills to worry about. There’s 1 procedure I can get to assist if I choose and that’s a feeding tube. Rest is just chill and wait for the inevitable. I’ve worked my whole life like most. I have a good, high paying job. Love what I do. Did you know that when you go out on disability you lose your life and health insurance through your employer? Yeah… that’s fun. Can’t get life insurance if you’re terminally ill either anywhere else. Remedy? Be lucky enough to be dead within 12 months. If a doctor will say that,…
My wife’s employer is being shady.
She works for a contractor doing data processing for a large finance conglomerate. She was invited to apply to the company and get out from under her contractor. She passed background checks and aced the interviews, got a verbal offer, and so on. She was promised an offer letter by yesterday morning. She hasn’t received it. The February 13 training class for her contractor was canceled despite record profits (sound familiar?) At the same time, they’re trying to add mandatory overtime to the staff that are there, at least 3 days per week. The contractor has also sent several nasty-grams to the whole team. They’re a crackdown on some of the bullshit rules, in addition to adding new ones. For example, Phones need to be kept in vehicles and no calls are allowed to be made in the building. It used to be that phones were allowed in break and…
I'm not a big conspiracy theorist but if most signs are indicating the economy is actually improving, what's the fucking impetus to lay off thousands of people with the given reason being “the economy” whenever asked? IF I wanted to teach my employees in general who's really in charge and it's not a seller's market anymore I'd just layoff a shit ton, get the remaining to kiss my ass again and stop with all the “pro-union, better pay, no more work from home” talk, and hire back who I needed after the fact (once I reset their vacation time, PTO, etc back to day one, that is). Seems a little odd…
Its been suggested I take action for a “hostile work environment” which is pretty accurate tbh, I don’t even feel comfortable walking past her in the hallway. This isn’t her first incident either, last year she pushed another coworker while passing her, she also went to HR and they told her they didnt see it so they couldn’t do anything. This incident with me, however, was definitively caught on camera but I’m afraid if I wait too long, the cameras are possibly set to erase the footage. What should I do?
I (28) really feel like I'm watching the world Ive grown up in burn. It's not just bc of news headlines or social media headlines, it's literally with my own two eyes and ears. High inflation is fucking over so many people that it's becoming everyone for themselves type shit. Like people have said “I hope they have good footing right now or else it's gonna suck”… In no fkn way did I envision my young adulthood to be filled with seeing so many friends, co workers and fellow humans suffering in the living hell of capitalism that was left to us. It's fkn depressing seeing and hearing people struggle even if they're working 2 jobs! I'm tired of being underpaid and not getting raises to match the current cost of living. I'm pissed that capitalism had me leave my small family back home just so we can have enough…
I know this is “anti-work” but please hear me out. I don’t like going to cafes and stuff because I honestly don’t like making people work for me. But if I could be a person who visits a cafe, with a very simple order, leaves a generous tip and cleans up my own table, would that give you a bit of a break from your daily toll? Some friendly conversation when it’s not too busy? Please let me know. Thank you.
I have an upcoming “mandatory meeting” at my job that I'm being told we're not being paid to attend it. It feels weird that they can make me drive almost 30 minutes to a meeting that im not even being compensated for. Is this legal for them to do?
