In the UK we have Universal Credit. A family in my specific circumstances (2 adults, 2 kids, 1 income, renting) will receive some until you reach a single income of around £77,000/year. They work out your total entitlement (around £2,100 for me) and then 55% of 'take-home pay' comes off of that. So: 35k salary = £900 deductions (tax etc) and £2,000 take-home. They take £1,100 from entitlement and you receive £1,000 payment. 50k salary = £1,500 deductions (tax etc) and £2,707 take-home. They take £1,489 from entitlement and you receive £611 payment. 65k salary = £2,157 deductions (tax etc) and £3,260 take-home. They take £1,793 from entitlement and you receive £307 payment. I was on 50k and had £3,351 hitting my bank every month. I had a lot of things getting to me and I was considering moving to a new job. That's what led me to work this…

DAE struggle with a tempermental boss?
My superior is a nice guy overall. However they very frequently have moments of emotional outbursts. Need something urgent at the wrong moment and you’ll be sure to get blasted. It doesn’t matter whose around listening or how inappropriate or embarrassing the out burst is. Everyone gets silent and just pretends it isn’t happening rather than speak up about how unacceptable it is. Go to HR like so many before you and nothing happens. A slap on the wrist, another write up. This person has been here for almost 20 years and although the common belief is anyone is replaceable this person is almost as permanent as the bricks and mortar bc of everything they are willing to take on outside of their job description. It would be hard to find someone else willing to dedicate their entire life to this place. Hours upon hours of overtime willingly invested. No…
Many of the posts and activity I see here are from a left point of view. No disrespect, just an observation. However, I figured I'd chime in with a different perspective. (32M) I was that guy, came from nothing. Low income city schools, fighting over lunch money and wearing the same clothes more than once a week. Pulled myself up by my boot straps, stopped feeling sorry for myself and grinded, hard. I started a construction company. I've beat this drum for 7 years. I've witnessed an annual decline in humanity since. Everything has slowly gotten worse. Depression, stupidity, entitlement, confusion and general despair. Aside from economics which have a bearing on everyone, people have lost their minds. I've never fought so hard over $200 change orders for unforeseen rot or issues behind walls. Nobody reads their contract or terms, they get angry at everything. I'm an appreciation driven person,…
I’ve been seeing a lot of work here recently with tipped employees. Sometimes the anger is directed at the employer (as it should) and other times at the customers. As an American, I hate the tipping culture. Never knew it until I lived in Europe and realize how ass backwards it is. However, every time I talk to a worker who is bitching about not getting tipped enough I ask them if they rather be paid a livable wage and I’ve always been told “no because it would be less than what I make in tips”. So, how much would you deem enough in todays pay standard to give up tips for a guaranteed paycheck?
