What’s better than finding out you were paid less than minimum wage in 2022? Being told you’re getting a raise for 2023, then finding out that it’s also beneath the updated minimum wage.

Just a reminder that even small businesses can be predatory (sometimes worse than large corporations). The sheer level of ineptitude and capitalistic disregard of the employees well-being seen here is only slightly less baffling than it is deeply infuriating. TL;DR – Deeply entitled owner pays the hourly employees less than minimum wage in 2022, is called out as we enter 2023, only to offer a “generous” raise that's even further beneath this year's minimum wage. Proceeds to act like she has no idea she's done anything wrong, wonders why everyone is quitting. Story: My girlfriend picked up a seasonal role at a small business in Seattle and we quickly realized that she – and the other junior employees – were being compensated beneath minimum wage. This is one of the more progressive areas of the US, so minimum wage for 2022 is $17.27. The hourly employees were offered $17.00; a…

I called the Ethics Hotline for my job but it went straight to the Human Resources department.

The Ethics line is supposedly run by an independent third-party according to the website. My report went straight to my company's human resources department who then anonymously contacted the department I'm in and asked around about an issue that only I've been complaining about. Some of the behavior from management towards me is kind of making sense now if they knew I was the one who made the report. Just recently the HR representative contacted me about my independent third-party anonymous report but didn't seem to care if my department was breaking the law. The HR rep only seemed to care if it was negatively affecting me.

Can a job withhold raises?

My wife just told me that to get her yearly raise she has to sign a piece of paper stating that she will not talk to anyone about how much her raise is or how much she makes per hour. She isn’t allowed to take a picture of the paper either because they make them sign it right then and there. I know talking about wages is protected but don’t know anything about this subject matter. Is this legal at all? Edit: We live in Mississipi, my main question is if it is illegal to withhold a raise pending a signature on a document stating they can't talk about wages.

Has Cost of Living and Inflation outpaced Middle-Class Earning Capability?

A quick google search states that “the average household in the United States spends $61,334 a year on expenses.” Let's assume an individual at age 25, who plans on working until they are age 65, wants to save enough for retirement to have the ability to afford $61,334 in expenses per year for 25 years. A quick calculation in excel shows that, with an average inflation rate of 3% per year, in 40 years it will take $200,073.83 to have the same purchasing power as $61,334.00 currently has today. In 65 years (The last year of this individual's expected retirement) it will take $418,810.16 to accomplish what $61,344.00 can currently accomplish in 2023. The worst part, if we continue to apply this inflation calculation year over year for 25 years after retirement, we get a sum total cost of living for those 25 years of $7,713,454.66. Meaning it will cost…

When should I leave an interview?

Hey I’m at this interview right now and the interviewer left to deal with a customer. It’s been 15 minutes and I’ve seen them just walk around the restaurant lol. Should I just leave at this point?
