“Be careful. It’s a private company” after being fired and not signing severance agreement.

Long story short, I reported sexual harassment of an executive a few months ago and the past few weeks it has been apparent they’re planning to fire me. Well, it finally happened today. They claimed it was due to mandatory layoffs and offered me two weeks severance (insulting) as long as I signed a document that I wouldn’t sue. I told them I was legally advised not to sign (because I was) and they asked for the document back. I said I was legally advised not to give it back (because I was) and they stated it was company property and I legally can’t keep it. After I said it was in my car and I’d get it (it was in my pocket), my HR says to me, “Be careful. It’s a private company.” So my question…what the fuck does that even mean?
