Being jerked around by “potential” job offers

My partner and I both lost our jobs this year and while we've had odds jobs and freelancing gigs that have kept us afloat for the time being, we really do want/need something full time to maintain ourselves. We both got within striking distance of offers recently. Here's how it went: My Partner: Four rounds of interviews, including a technical -> passed with flying colors ->received a job offer -> was told that the company just needed to complete its annual financial review and then HR could send begin onboarding -> offer revoked, company decided it didn't want to fill the position. He's crushed. Me: Seven rounds of interviews -> had to chase them down over the course of two months to get a straight answer over whether I was still in contention -> eventually rejected -> reached out to me later saying they might have another full time role…

Me: Seven rounds of interviews -> had to chase them down over the course of two months to get a straight answer over whether I was still in contention -> eventually rejected -> reached out to me later saying they might have another full time role for me -> turned out to be part time & contract -> I turned that down -> they reached out again later saying they could make it full time -> I accepted -> they're back in a “decision making process” for the last few weeks. I'm giving up hope of this turning into anything real.

It just seems thoughtlessly and unnecessarily cruel. We're real people putting our hopes and dreams for our future together into this.
