My girlfriend and I work together in the medical field. Understaffed and underpaid (as always those go hand-in-hand). Responsibilities for both of us have gone up drastically. Her as a medical biller (no raise with the “promotion”) and me as a scribe for a new doctor (including the extra work that goes along with onboarding a new doctor).
Every quarter they offer a perfect attendance bonus of $125. Not much, but one of the few ways to make more money outside of the 3-4% annual bonuses.
This past quarter, my girlfriend made it to work everyday and has been covering for their depleting front office staff. Except when her mom died suddenly over Labor Day weekend. She was offered 3 days of bereavement and took it and cried her first few days back at work because she wasn’t ready to return, but did knowing they are short staffed and they wanted the bonus.
Today, the results came out and my girlfriend was on the list! Until shortly after her manager sent an email stating she made a mistake and will no longer be giving my girlfriend the bonus. Keep in mind, this is a multi-million dollar practice and the bonus is $125.
The only reason I am still employed is because the CEO wasn’t in her office when I was made aware of this. Am I crazy for thinking the bonus should have still been paid out? I want others opinions before i turn up the pressure.
