Best way to handle a PIP?

I don't want to give a lot of info bc I'm not trying to defend myself on Reddit but my supervisor told me today that he will be putting me on a performance improvement plan starting in October. I've been at the company (~30 people) for coming up on two years. I've had some issues over the last few months and want to quit but I'm also tempted to stay on their payroll as long as possible. Opinions? Experiences?
