These posts, I see them on reddit a lot these days, so bizarre. I call them anti-advice, that is, advice that's designed to do the exact opposite of what advice is meant to do, which is actually help you.

Let me explain.

Let's say you talk about your experiences throughout your working history, you read the latest news headlines, you see everyone you know struggling to find a job, you know you may be struggling just to get by, you point out shit is fucked online, and someone comes to inform you that, see, if you just learn to code/learn a trade/get a marketable skill/etc, etc, that actually things would suddenly and quite easily and simply work out for you. Really, you just didn't make the right moves buddy. But if you make these moves, guarantee, guarantee precarity will vanish from your life!

Let's say you followed their advice and then failed, without fail they will tell you either you didn't really follow the advice, or add an extra caveat.

These people are not fucking trying to help you, you are an internet stranger, they don't give a damn about you. What they're doing is aggressive, they are trying to get you to shut the fuck up. They are indirectly telling you that the system works just great in fact for pretty much everyone, whatever struggles you may face are your struggles, your individual failure. What's that, your experiences match those of everyone you know? Well they don't match the experiences of them and their friend group, so what do you say to that? Maybe everyone you know is a loser because you're a loser too?

These people are trying to pull the wool over your eyes, they want and need you to bury your head in the sand, for whatever reason they don't want people rocking the boat, they want people to face individualized despair and be trapped there, they don't want you connecting with those across the country with the same experiences, they don't want you getting organized (that's why their suggestions are always ways to contribute to the rat race, never ways to organize your workplace to advocate for better conditions collectively), they don't want you taking to the streets, they don't want another Occupy Wall Street, another BLM, another Labor Movement.

Do I think there's some conspiracy? Nah. But I do think that when the forces of mass resistance start to build, the force of hierarchical power builds up in opposition.

People who support the status quo, whether they're rich or not, want you to feel alone. Need you to feel alone. Need you to blame yourself for failing to win the rat race that was rigged before you were born. Need you to despise your own family and friends as losers holding you back over a system that's demonstrably failing more and more people going off the latest headlines.

And most of all, they need you improving your life in ways that specifically means picking up the pace on the rat race.
