Boss asked me to come to dinner with executive but approved my PTO for that day.

I work in environmental consulting which is renowned for constant overtime and overworked/underpaid. I have PTO approved on one of the days that the executive director of the environmental department is coming to have dinner with us. Obviously an after hours, non billable and non payable event. I know for a fact that my boss wouldn't have approved my PTO if he would have remembered this. However I'll be out of town and since I'm not getting paid for this dinner, I don't feel the need to go. I told my boss I would see if I can make something work, but truly I just said that to keep him off my ass and don't plan on going. Thoughts?
