Boss: I need you to supervise the manager, but they’re still your manager.

I worked at a small business for a few years and left. When I heard the old manager was leaving I decided to ring up the owner and asked if he needed a manager. We sat down and he gave me a long line of bull shit about how he didn't really want anyone to be a manager, and that he'll take on the responsibilities of the role. a few months later nothing was being managed as the owner was sitting at home doing nothing. I started telling my coworkers what to do, as I had 6 years experience and they had around 2 each. the owner gets wind of this and sits me down to tell me he's making one of the newer employees the manager because “they're always here on time, they're always working hard, and they've never left me” I fought the urge to quit, but heard…

I started telling my coworkers what to do, as I had 6 years experience and they had around 2 each. the owner gets wind of this and sits me down to tell me he's making one of the newer employees the manager because “they're always here on time, they're always working hard, and they've never left me”

I fought the urge to quit, but heard him out. He rambled on about how the both of us would make the same amount of money, and that nothing was really going to change, but the kicker was “I need you to keep an eye on them, especially the first few months, to tell me how they're doing”

I was dumbfounded.

“you want me to supervise the manager?”

“No, just make sure they are doing things correctly.”

“You want me to report back to you if they are doing something wrong?”

“yes”

“so you want me to manage the manager?”

he got mad, the conversation went nowhere and that was that. the next 3 months I did about 10-15 hours of work a week while the new manager did everything plus some. I gave up all my managerial duties completely. It was 3 months of netflix and big fat shits without a care in the world. I never reported back to him, I never supervised the manager, and I certainly didn't help the manager out either. I got my big responsibilities stripped away from me. “Hey im not the manager” I would say. Nothing my coworkers could do. I went from working a hard 45 hours a week, to an easy 10-15 hours a week.

The place closed permanently because of the pandemic just a few short months later. It was glorious.
